• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

M90 subie!

I recall seeing an NA subaru motor built to 300 chp, 300 ctq. It cost $10k+ for parts and labor. That's retarded to not even double the output of the motor. It included a stroker kit (crank, rods, pistons [12:1 cr iirc], injectors), bored block (stroker + bore = 2.8 liters final displacement), cams, intake, exhaust, heads were P&P'd, with a rev limit of 7,500 or 8,000 rpm. I don't remember specifically what the rev limit was actually, it might have been as low as 7k. Anyway, the power band was flat. I believe it made 280 chp at 2,000 rpm, went up slightly on the way to redline. Torque was 200 at 2,000 rpm, went up to 290 at 5,250. It was a farily impressive powerband, and that car would destroy most anything just from the flat powerband it had, but the amount of money spent on it was a little out there.

For $10k, you could forge the internals, build the valvetrain, lower the CR, and run an M90 with 20 PSi of boost (on the stock block), and have money left. So, don't ever assume that it's cheap to build an NA Subie. ;)

^ haha obviously you know alot more about subies than i thats just what i was told and i think they were saying it couldnt be cheaply done right idr, but eitherway neither option is gonna be cheap an by the time you got done you could have prob bought something just as fast

Yeah, I'm elbows deep in my WRX right now, actually. Was a pain.

Honestly, I'd go the twincharged route. Best bang for the buck.

There is two subies where I live that are dirty quick, one was a blue WRX and he had it twin turbo but then sold the setup because it was problematic and then went to a single turbo with a front mount. And then a red impreza with a top mount and a single turbo. Both look beautiful but the imp is a dirty sleeper de-badged and a top mount, couldn't tell it would whoop my ass if I didn't see under the hood.

how's the maintenance on your subie, Sarra? My friend is on iwsti.com and he's already spent so much money on his 07 STi and he only has an exhaust and reflash done

Plugs are supposed to last 90k, doesn't have wires, coil packs are damn expensive but last forever... Engine takes 4.8 qts of oil, trans takes 4 qts of 75w90. Oil change interval on mine is 3k/3 months, trans service is every 30k.

It's pretty cheap, but changing the spark plugs takes around an hour; you have to pull the air filter box, battery, and washer fluid res to get access to them. It's pretty cramped in there. Servicing the rear diff is pretty easy too, just like any other open diff (VLSD doesn't require friction modifier like clutch LSD's).

I've sunk... $300 into the car in the past 6 months. But, some of that was stupidity. If I had been smart, I would have purchased the up pipe I just got instead of the manifold I got before.

I'm going to be buying a new shortblock soon, hoping it's a closed deck JDM block. If it's closed deck, I will be pulling it apart and rebuilding it with forged parts, buying some stock heads, and building a motor for an FP red turbo, if it's a piddly open deck block, I'll put new bearings in it and sell it.

Annnd... I did more work so far today on my exhaust. I will post pics later, when I am done, probably tomorrow. I wire wheeled my cast iron exhaust manifold parts (no more rust), cleaned up my heat shields (that I will be putting back on anyway) and am in the process of painting them.

Edit: Just so you all are are aware, Subaru, in the 1990's, had a 6 cylinder 3.3 liter NA engine (only available with an automatic). It was in a car called the "SVX" (Safety Vehicle eXperimental, WRX is World Rally eXperimental)... In order to change the plugs in the SVX, you had to pull the motor. There was no other way to do it. Talk about retarded design.

well thank god I didn't buy an SVX cuz I had the option to... sweet looking car but when I found out they didn't have a manual and the following for them performance wise wasn't huge... i went with the talon

There were a few people who either turboed, twin turboed, or supercharged the SVX. The SVX stock is actually faster than a stock 2002-2005 WRX. The 5 speed swap is also popular for them, and it's pretty easy to do. The firewall even has the holes punched in it from the factory, you just have to pop the punchout out. In fact, every Subaru has the punchouts on both sides, and for AT and MT, as far as I know.

Blah, I think sometimes that I know too much about Subies... Which is why I want to learn something about other cars, RX-7's, Grand Prix, S13/S14, Cobalt SS, etc.

cant wait to get into the subaru scene. ive really been scoping out the 2005+ legacy GTs in stick.
