I actually helped this guy over on rs25.com figure out why his drive by wire wasn't working.
And... Well... Subaru has a 3 liter flat 6. It has AVCS (similar to VTEC or MIVEC etc). Jeff Perrin, of Perrin Tuning, put forged internals in one, built the heads, and put a GT35 turbo on it. The motor was installed in an STi. It was sickeningly fast.
As for the 2.5i with the M90, yeah, it's a bit overkill. The M90 is made for 3.5 liters+, it's going to flow too much for the 2.5 liter motor it's on. If Spud (the guy who built it) lowers the compression and forges the internals, and ports the heads enough, he might get a usable setup out of it. The other problem is tuning, but shortly, COBB tuning should be releasing an easy to use (compared to what's currently available) tuning tool, the AccessPort, for the 2005+ NA Subarus. If he can get one of those, get a protune, and upgrade his injectors, Spud should be set.
The ONLY Subaru's that don't have lag are the twin scroll ones with AVCS, and they were only 2 liters and only available in Japan. Even the 2.5's have lag. My friend's 2008 EVO X with it's twin scroll turbo and superior heads (they flow 10-20% better than any Subaru head) has no lag, and he's putting 320 hp down at all four wheels.
