Low coolant light.

2002 Grand Prix 40th Anniversary 3800 Motor. Not supercharged. I changed the low coolant sensor and light will go out after driving a few minutes around town. Once you get on the highway, the low coolant light comes on but temp. gauge does not climb. Any suggestions?

may have low coolant still. try bleeding the system of air and filling the over flow jug if its not 1/2 full at least.

or you can just unplug the sensor and never see the low coolant light again.

Are you having to add coolant? Could be the lower intake mainfold (LIM) gasket

I recently replaced a radiator in GP. Had to swap the level sensor from the original. For a few days after the swap, the light would come on while accelerating. I knew the level was good so I ignored it. It stopped after a couple days. I dunno.

'99 GP 3800 no supercharger.
Low Coolant light is blinking. I recently replaced the coolant temp sensor, not sure if this is related, don't think so, but thought I would mention.

Question: What is involved in removing the low coolant sensor? Do I have to remove the bracket, battery and then the whole coolant tank? Any help with directions would be appreciated.

Thanks

remove the pass side head light, look to the side of the rad, theres a C clip that holds it in, pull the clip out and then pull the sensor out, just a o ring seals it.

or, if your coolant is always full, the sensor could just be dirty with dex sludge, so you could try cleaning it first, then reinstall it. see if its ok. if its still flashing replace or just unplug it, then the light will never come on again. mines unplugged for 5 or 6 years now.

Scottydoggs: Thanks! You're a BIG help.

Actually this will be a double fix. My pass headlight needs replacing anyway, not because it's out, but because it's the original one and the lens is dulled and always wet inside. Driver's side is much newer. Reason, I've hit 3(!!) deer with this car. One was at full highway speed on the driver's side at night, but we just grazed the deer and it ran away. The one before was a full impact on the driver's side - had to replace headlight grill, hood, etc. Last one was just a graze on the pass side - at a stop sign, I bumped the darn thing as I came to a stop. Nothing was affected and the beast fell down and ran away ...

In our neighborhood, deer are rats with antlers.

My Low Coolant light would always come on periodically. Never seemed to fix it. Every time I added coolant to the top, the level would always drop, but the car never overheated or burned any. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
