• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

So since its getting to be the holidays and electronics are getting cheaper and cheaper all the time any one know if a notebook coule be slaved to a touchscreen? I was thinking of using a notbook and gutting the center council to fit it. Or putting it under the passenger seat. My second question is anyone know if you can run XM radio and GPS off a notebook too? Im sure their are programs to support it but I dont know of any. Im mainly looking for the HD space and running GPS

Its entirely possible to hook a touchscreen up to a laptop, as far as running xm you would need an air card to get the internet connection, and gps you could go buy the streets and trips package with the gps device thats hooks up to the laptop via usb and mounts on your dash, this website has just about everything you would need... good luck

Ive been on that site many times but not a memeber how to you think a notebook would hold up if mounted under the seat? Im interested in building a carputer just looking for the most reliable, user friendly and cost effective route to go.

Under the seat wouldn't be bad, put it under the passenger's seat so the heater wouldn't **** things up. Heat kills electronics. :p

Ive been going to school for the last year specifically for electronics and radar equpiment, And just landed a job doing electronics repair for the military. The part im looking help for is if anyone knows exactly what progrmas to use on a notebook so that the touch screen would work and so that I could use GPS too. I was also thinking a solid state hard drive would work best because of the abuse of being stuck in a car.

Most touch screen utilizes an I/O based on USB protocol. So really, it'll come with a .dll to work in windows and you'll be fine. Nothing to worry about! It'll probably be recognized and installed by Vista or 7

So anything downloadable to the notebook should work with the touch screen in the dash? Im looking to use the solidstate hard drive for music and durability. I understand electronics but networking isnt what I completly understand to make it all work.

Touchscreens come with a USB, in addition to their display adapter, just like your mouse or keyboard. They're considered an input device. You need the software "drivers" for them to talk to the OS correctly. So yea...plug and play ;)

Well since I800 figured that out for you, I think it might be useful to know, apparently Onstar boxes have a GPS which can be tapped into. To what extent they are useful is another story. :p

It all depends on the prices and where you'd want to put it on your dash.

never thought of the damn ON* my 2002 has onstar but i believe its the old analog kind and ive never used it, so i doubt it will be of any help.

Thats the two way communication portion, apparently it uses a standard GPS system to determine your location. Its a lot quicker than triangulating your position using an analog cell phone network. :p

So tapping into ON* would be better or worse? still trolling mp3car.com for ideas and man my bank accounts never full enough lol. Thought I dont plan of getting rid of my GP and after landing a new job things are looking good for the new year.

I'm just saying its a free GPS transponder. Thats all. If you can find software for it, good for you, if not, then you'll have to figure something else out.
