lost 3 rd gear HELP!

well it looks like i lost 3rd gear, every thing shifts fine through 1 and 2 and wont go into 3 rd, when i take it on the highway, it does shift into overdrive and feels ok, but no 3 rd gear.

also i went inside for a while and went to go back out, and the car would not crank, just nothing no click, but the lights going out when you start the car (does this all the time its normal) when you turn the key to start it. found the neg terminal loose tightened it up still no start. went to get a jacket, and tried again and it started right up. dont know what to think on this one. car has been starting normal since.

i have been having a tcc or pcs problem, not sure if its related or not. it was chugging at just over 30 mph when light on the gas and in 3 rd gear. no more chugging now.

and i pulled the trans fuse (while the car wasrunning) to see if it was blown, and then the cel went on.

i was scared to turn it off, as it had just not started. ill pull the battery tomorrow or read it and then clear it at autozone.

i got the codes read, and i have a U1300. this one is a class 2 short to ground. from what i can tell its abs related, and my brakes do suck lately. the second is a p1860 tcc solenoid, or bad connection.

will a bad tcc solenoid make you lose 3 rd gear? i sure hope so. i have o/d and its holding like a boss on the highway, 70 mph @ 1700 to 1800 rpm, if i tap the brakes the rpm's still go up like they are supposed to.

wish i knew which plug to pull. i can only guess the d/s top back of the trans where all them plugs are, right?

and how should the trans act if its unplugged?

if you plug that whole thing then it wont run at all
by just unpluging the tcc solenoid your keeping the tcc from engaging so if theres a problem with that then the problem should go away with it not engaging

Ok Regal buddy. It's funny because my trans acted up more this weekend than it has since last Dec.

Anyhow take those codes and search Gearchatter.com for them. Read the info from the fsm and you'll be light years ahead.

Next up.. ask Intrigue98 how much he wants for his spare transmission that works great. It's from a 98 Regal actually. It's got the upgraded 4th hub and I don't remember if the V8 chains went in as well.

Looks like you and I are gonna be swapping transmissions in our Regals soon.

What he wants to hear isn't going to help his issue though. I can lie to him and say it's going to magically fix itself after the first 3 feet of snow falls this year, I'd be lying though.

Likely causes are a broken 3rd gear sprag or totally shot 3rd gear clutches. If you unplug the trans connector, I'm pretty sure you get third gear only.

you guys are right im not going to want to hear this, that's some ****ty news.

which connector am i looking to unplug? a pic would be grand :D

and if i only get 3 rd gear after pulling the connector, im f'ed? and if i get all gears im ok? am i on the right track here?

and by driving it am i doing any further damage? works damn fine on the highway, o/d locks up like a champ.

ok off to gear chatter, what an ironic name for such a site.

The main big plug right there that's easy to get at. The two in the back are for the gear selector switch and only feed the dash indicator.

You have 1st, 2nd and 4th right? If so.. yeah..you are doing a trans swap. It's cool man. So am I.

Heck, you could drive up here next week, buy a trans from Max and help me install it.

bill your bumming me out here, i may just take you up on that offer. im sure i'd be better off having real help. and i aint ascared to get dirty either. i just have no experience with pulling a fwd trans. im sure it would take me all weekend to complete myself, if not longer.

well it looks bad kids. i was unable to get the plug off the trans, didn't want to break it, so i pulled the # 26 fuse under the hood, it says trans, and all i get is 3 rd gear, put the fuse back in and i have 1,2 and o/d.

That's odd.

First off.. you squeeze te two sides of that connector to make it a circle (technically it's almost oval) and that's how it releases to come off. (probably wish I had told you that yesterday huh?)

Secondly, you get third w/o power and you don't get it with power. Odd. Third you see is the gear when both soleniods are off. I guess that would mean the sprag is working. Hmmm not really sure where to go next.

As far as helping you swap. We could do it pretty quickly. I've got the procedure memorized.
