Bad LIm usually put oil in the radiator, what connects to the LIM? EGR, hence the smell. That's what would make me look at the LIM.

Would you mind explaining how the LIM gasket where oil doesn't even pass through it can put oil into the radiator. Let alone the only oil possible to be near the lim gasket has zero pressure because it's returning to the oil pan and the coolant is pressurized to 16psi.

PS..I'm looking at you with one eye cocked and wondering....can I have some of that stuff you got?
 
Yea, you could also get the doorman and it's fairly cheap. It's quick and dirty; unbolt UIM install stove pipe and o-rings, bolt the new UIM on and go down the road. It's alot cheaper than a new motor. Run it until it spins a bearing. You should also check the oil for coolant contamination, not due to the UIM but the LIM. Like these guys said once you have the UIM off you may want to do the LIM also.
 
Psst Chuck, the o-rings are only seperate on the 96-03 SC's. All the other gaskets both NA and SC, they are part of the gasket.

PS..I'm assuming it's an NA

I guess I was assuming SC. The NA kit I had was indeed the combined o-ring gasket. Thanks Bill.

Well then pull it in the garage and take the UIM off. Heck it probably has most of the coolant already gone. LOL
I can have un upper intake off in about 10-15 minutes. That's including draining some of the coolant. Your local autoparts store will most likely have UIM on the shelf. If you decide to do the LIM, well, they'll probably have the gaskets in stock also.

I know Bill will say I'm a slowpoke.
 
Rico, I talked to Bill about this in chat. My diagnosis was based on experience with an N/A 3800 in a 95 olds delta 88. Had oil in the coolant, not red, grey. LIM gaskets were toast, did lim and uim gaskets flushed the coolant system and have run the car over 20,000 miles with absolutely no problems since. I understand the coolant system is under pressure, I can't come up with any other explanation for the problem though, if it was head gaskets the oil would have showed back up in the coolant, it hasn't.
 


Theoretically, when the engine begins to cool there is a slight low pressure zone within the cooling system due to PV=nRT. That is with respect to the crank case. This is one of the reasons why there is an overflow for the cooling system. Coolant is forced out because of pressure and returns upon cooling.

With a severely damaged LIM I guess it is possible to get some oil in the cooling system. Although if you think of it logically the lifter valley is far below the LIM gaskets. The lifter valley would have to be quite full of oil to get any appreciable amount of oil into the coolant system in this manner.

It's more likely that when the motor is hot you'll get coolant in the crank case which is what most have observed. Coolant is forced out the leaking LIM gaskets and into the lifter valley.

You say 95 Delta 88. Maybe the Series I is a little different. I worked on an old Buick LeSabre with the Series I and it looked quite similar to the Series II.
 
Chuck.. Delta 88, Bonneville, Riviera, Park Ave....every non-W body car got the S2 NA in 1995. And.. IRSC is an old Bonne forum buddy who went by the name Delta88. Yeah..I nearly reached through the computer and gave him an old slap on the shoulder when I realized that.

You probably have enough of them in the shop. I could throw two complete engines and one tranny at you from my garage...and a plethora of brackets, SC parts etc.
