Looking to buy a GXP

extreme

New member
I am in the market searching for a Grand Prix GXP. Now I have read a little bit on them and been told a bit on them. I am semi-familiar with the car. My main concern is the year. I was told that there is a big difference between the 2005 and the 2006+? Is this true? What is the main difference?

Also when looking into these cars is there any common problems that should be checked out?

Also while I am at it, the car will possibly get a cai & cat-back exhaust. any suggestion on a cai. also who is the best company for a tune on this vehicle?

Thanks!

I dont know about the 05 or 06 but I love my 08, it does seem like the transmission slips when starting out every once and a while. Ive had looked at by the dealership and we drove it for a while and it will never do it with a mechanic in the car(go figure) but if anything breaks its got the 100 k warranty on it, as far as the exhaust goes...everyone will tell you to go with magnaflow, but I will tell you to go with flowmasters just to be different. Thats what I have on mine and I get compliments every day from ppl I dont even know, also it has the KNN cold air intake. Check it out.

I own an 07 GXP and love it. Best car I have had. Issues to watch for are the Bilstein rear struts. NOT CHEAP. Average price is $500-600 per strut. Also the car has different size tires and wheels so rotation is out. Make sure you keep a very good alignment. Don't cheap out use premium fuel, the car hates regular.
I can't comment on the exhaust, I left mine stock, it sound good the way it is to me.

I just bought an 07 and got it for $4K under KBB. These cars are already a good value even at KBB prices. I can't yet comment on maintenance and repair cost, but I had a mechanic look up any recalls or service bulletins and there was nothing. I'm extremely happy with the car and would recommend it. Hope this helps.

i think 05 cars was the old electronics and the 06 and newer were the Can-bus system.. with seperate TCM and ECM computers..

where you getting your prices for OEM? That is the price for both from what I have seen. There is a thread over at LS1 that has the same thing and a site that has them for 1/2 price of OEM.:th_thumbsup-wink:

I'll help ya out a little bit. Nothing on the GXP is cheap to fix, sorry.

Given the new technologies on the car I assume you are correct. But the 5 year 100K powertrain warranty should take care of anything major. 2007s are covered until late next year. Any manufacturing or design problem should be apparent by then.

I don't like my magnaflows...too much drone
If you purchase a GXP I would recom. installing a transmission cooler and a transgo shift kit. The shift kit makes driving alot more fun

struts are more like $175-235. the major problem is the trans but other than that nothing major. 05-06 have different computers than the 07-08 models and from what i heard easier to tune. LS1tech has alot of stuff
