Long GM shutdowns could cripple suppliers

DETROIT — A nine-week summer shutdown at most of General Motors' North American plants could bankrupt as many as 10 percent of GM's top 300 parts makers, says a source familiar with GM's thinking.
The 300 top suppliers ship more than 80 percent of the parts that go into GM vehicles. The automaker has 1,500 parts suppliers, all of which will suffer from the shutdown.
The 300 range from small companies such as mirror maker Gentex Corp. to multibillion-dollar enterprises such as seat maker Lear Corp.
GM spokesman Dan Flores declined to comment on the likelihood of bankruptcies. But he acknowledged that the lengthy production shutdown will cause cash-flow crises among suppliers.
"We recognize these production cuts are going to be very painful, but the decision was required as we continue to bring our inventories in line with market demand," Flores said.
GM's purchasing executives have been mindful of the potential for trouble, and they have kept suppliers informed of their intentions.
During his weekly teleconference with suppliers on Thursday, April 23, Bo Andersson, GM group vice president for purchasing, notified suppliers of the nine-week shutdown. GM's action will expand the usual two-week summer shutdown and cut existing production plans by 170,000 units.

And the begin of the end for one of the Big Three...everything is just going down the ****ter IMO.

Hello Domino Effect ;)

Hope nobody rants me for this but I know they will...

If people would start buying cars from the big 3 rather than buying imports, some of this mess could of been avoided IMO. I'm sick an tired of people out there who have NEVER owned a domestic car talk the most **** about them. There are alot of those idiots out there, some of you know what i'm talking about.

Thats my rant, like it, hate it, or bash it. But I stand by what I say 100%. So say what you want, I don't care.

I hope GM pulls through, i'm a GM fan, always have been, always will be...

A while back NBC had a story on the "Big 3", they mentioned that only 2 members of Congress owned an American car........that is a sad fact

I am glad I dont work in that field anymore, even our 2-3 week shut downs were hard enough, I couldnt imagine being out of work that long.

And they say our recession is on its way back up, yeah right. Government Motors.

Hell the only thing remotely close to a import I owned was a chevy nova circa 87, yeah my fwd mud buggy. This is the first new car that I bought that wasnt a chevy, and replaced my s-10 for an s-15 to the GP.

I think taking food from your own people should be a federal crime.

My dad worked for GM, got 31 years in and retired, he worked about 13 years in the warehouse, the rest on the assembly line. His body got tore up over the years but at least he got to retire and enjoy his life even though he is having health problems.

I used to make pushrods, valves, lifters and springs for GM thru Elgin industries and another one that slipping my mind as well as tenneco.

I feel bad for some of my old co-workers, you work your ass off and this is what happens, many of those folks will never seen their pensions.
