Anybody running a GM locking gas cap with the tether? I can't find a listing, but I saw one many years ago, so I know they used to make them.

Delco #12F31L, locking gas cap w/o tether

Personally, I'm not a fan of locking gas caps. I lost the key and with a Google search found that I could in one tap with a hammer and nail completely lock the cap and remove it. Basically I'm saying the cap is so easy to negate that it isn't really a good option and that there are better options like anti-siphon device in tank.

I here ya. IMO, it will keep the majority of the thiefs away. My buddy woke up to a 1/4" hole in his empty tank, so if they want your gas, they will get it regardless.

Agreed! If someone is determined enough, they'll find a way. I'm just saying for the cost, there's better options. Btw bronco, your car is looking awesome!!
 
Hm. I didn't think that the gas cap could affect the catalytic converter code, but maybe I'm wrong? Hopefully it isn't your cat! I ended up tuning my rear o2 out and have no more issues!

My bad. P0442, evap leak. The funny part is that I reset it on the fly, and it doesn't come right back. The last time it came on was 3 weeks ago.
 
lol I thought that was a bit strange! Yeah, evap leaks can be tricky! "Technically" you can't use a standard smoke machine to check for leaks due to the possibility of igniting the gas, but the alternative costs over $1000! What I plan on doing if I have a leak is to use my homemade smoke machine and hook it up to some sort of holding tank for the smoke, then disconnect the smoke generator portion and blow the smoke into the system under pressure. Now, even this is risky since you'll be putting a slight pressure and air into a gas tank so any sparks will cause a big boom, but as long as you're not stupid and smoke around it, you shouldn't have any issues. It's a lot better than the alternative of having a shop do it! Just my thoughts on the matter.
 
Skip the locking gas cap. Most tanks already have a screen at the bottom of the fill hose where the tank is.

Second.. like you said.. if someone wants your fuel.. it's costing you more than a new tank of fuel.
 
Another bad of the locking gas cap: I bought one of my GP's from the Pontiac dealership back in 2004, and at that time, I purchased 2 locking caps with the tethers, they were for sale right at the dealership. I bought them and still use them. But in the winter, I have had snow and ice get under the fuel door on the top of the gas cap and then melt, and refreeze. That prevents the key from being inserted in the cap. Hasn't happened too often but it has happened to me.
One plus of having a locking cap is that is could stop someone from randomly removing the gas cap and pouring foreign objects or liquids in your tank. I belong to auto tech/mechanics groups and I read that it has happened where cars were brought in with the engine seized up from a vandal pouring sugar into the gas tank. A locking cap might prevent a vandal from doing that.
