• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

"Lil Alky", the epic build thread

Here's some shots of the porting I did on the heads, not finished pics unfortunately but you get the idea. Chambers I just started polishing. Again, nothing too rad, just a match port intake and a lil larger on the exhaust, just cleaned things up.

I wish the pics of the bowls came in a lil clearer, thats where they look really nice, especially after I got them finished. I was pretty jazzed when I took them to Bob's today and he said they looked really good.

Still mulling over cam choices.............

Ha, That's not gonna happen at this point. :p

So school me, what's the diff in the L32 heads? I don't care enough to search.

If I was made of money I would'nt be rebuilding a motor for a 15 year old car lol. I'm going as low buck as my gearhead brain and concience will let me while being completely thorough (no shortcuts). I let this thing set for too long waiting for that low mileage longblock deal that never came, whether it was an L67, L32, or whatever.

In the end I'll have a motor that runs harder than stock for less than the taxes I'd pay on a new car and that's my goal.

L32 heads will be 'newer' and they intake valve is slightly bigger. otherwise they are the same exact thing.

If this snake bite blower design for an m90 sounds close to a kb blower and delivers good gains I'll be in line for one.

Stiegemeier is a SI valve dealer so I'll prolly be getting thier L32 replacement valves with a custom backcut or he said he could cut down some larger valves an that would give me more margin. I leave all that shiz to the expert. I really just took them in for a valve job but Bob always goes the extra mile with my junk.

I'll have full dyno results when she's all put together. The best she ever did before with the 3.4 was 235 at the wheels on Stiegemeiers Dynojet.

Best time ever was a 13.99 at 99 mph at the old MAR in Wentzville. Luckily for everyone in the STL area Gateway Int. is opening back up and I hope to get both cars to the track this year.

I'll take that under advisement. :th_thumb-up:

Again, the heads are Bob's forte and I'll leave the details to him. He's done thousands of heads over the years so I don't really worry about what he does. When they are complete he'll give me all the details on what was done. He often orders "blanks" and finishes them but prolly not here if a viable replacement is available.

The only thing i have to worry about at this point is cam selection. The rest of my parts including the bearings should be here either today or Monday. I will post up a complete parts list with prices as this progresses.

I've seen people get great gains with the XP cam, but it seems recently that a growing number of people are discussing custom ground cam profiles.

if it was a straight foward been done before build, then yea XP...but theres some custom stuff going on here so custom grind, the custom grind are not much more spensive then the others.

I went with the XP but had I known more about cams at the time I would have had one custom ground.
The XP is nice but it leaves a lot to be desired, even on the stock heads.

I'd go with a cam that looked roughly like 220/224 .570/.570 114 LSA. Something around a -4 overlap. IIRC the XP is like -14 overlap. Another big change I'd go with is more aggressive lobes.
Even on the stock heads it would be a substantial upgrade IMO.

That sounds like a healthy cam. I've been fighting the idea of a cam swap but if I can have a custom cam that can provide solid gains and be close as possible to stock mpg's (due to my long drive to work) I'd do it. Plus if I want my car to be mid to low 20' s in highway mpg's I'd get an auto matic gto or a G8 lol.
