let's talk custom roots blower swaps

so knowing that i, and others, in the future hope to play a fun game of how much boost can i make from a roots blower, let's discuss...

swaps that have been done in the past:

- whipple
- MP112
- M112 hybrid
- TVS 1320 (yay, flake!)
- and of course the uber popular and BORING, genV swap

there are probably others because not that many people like to promote their setups on the interwebs like we do, but that is neither here nor there.

now, there are a few options for how to adapt a new blower onto the stock lower intake mani:

- adapter plate
- intercooler that doubles as an adapter plate
- destroy the lower intake and find a way to bolt it directly on (not that bad of an idea, really)

problems that a blower swap poses:

- outlet on the blower does not line up
- pulley/snout are in the wrong position and does not line up
- throttle body wont bolt on or be useable without an adapter (fairly easy to mock up)
- blower is massive and you blow your heads off the car (oh god that would be awesome)

now, here is where you all come in...and me when i get around to it or if i decide it is a good idea to buy parts and play. ;)



i find the biggest problem is the pulley/snout not lining up. a lot of the aftermarket blower vendors do offer different snout lengths, so that may or may not be an issue.

the next step is to locate the outlet on the blower to a good position. i dont find this to be a huge issue considering that you can use a slanted transition in the adapter plate. of all of the outlets i do not think this transition will have to be that big, but that all depends on the blower of choice. knowing this it brings into play a valuable concept: boost is boost is boost. regardless of how the air coming out of the blower flows into the lower intake, the lower intake will still pressurize and distribute the intake charge between the cylinders as it always does. this means that the outlet being slightly offset may not cause any issues. again, how much overlap you'd have depends on the blower that is chosen for the swap.

the throttle body adapter will never be that difficult. if you cant figure this part out then you're already screwed.



now, let's play devils advocate and start picking blowers that would be a good fit for a big build. blowers that have been done are all good and fun, but i would love to have a setup that is more one off. nick (blue) and i have been saying that a nice kenne bell blower would be the hellaciously cool, especially considering a few of them are water cooled (built in intercooler baby!). remember, this is mainly going for a cool factor (for me at least) and lame groany old man whines like a whipple are weak sauce to the max, regardless of it making 550whp. :D

honestly i think those are a different story considering they are externally mounted, not straight to the motor like a roots blower.
 
has a kenne bell been done?

they just came out with a 4.2Ltr blower with intergrated IC. super slick, two fittings on the case in and out
 


M-series blowers are garbage. Begin with the highest efficiency blower and identify its interfacing requirements. Efficiency is everything.
 
the big KB blowers i think are too big.

i also agree that efficiency is where you want to focus, but you also dont want to throw a blower on the car that is meant for a motor twice our size. as much as 45 pounds of boost out of a blower would be cool, it would also be pretty pointless.

which makes this build kind of difficult...the key being, as stated that it needs to be efficient and not "blow the heads off". It would be way out of the VE range and just pointless. So in general any blower that would be used on a 4.6 would be around the limits i think. There was the one guy on clubgp selling his Ford GT blower kit. It sounded wicked to say the least. Taking that is a 5.4 engine, it still made great numbers from what i recall. So I would say blowers up to that level would be cool to use.
 


The whipple 140 has also been done. a TVS 2300 is almost the exact same displacement. That'd be a really cool build.
 
That one isn't good enough.

You need one of the dimensions of a gen III blower for a 3800.

Also: TVS 1900.

its $2200 from magnuson, but I need to talk to them again with regards to the inlet. That alone might be another 400 to machine.
 


so nick...what else is being done engine wise to accommodate blowers of this size and magnitude? full line bore out to 30 over? what stage heads? Just gotta research different engines that run the blower of choice and check the flow numbers to study what would be needed on these engines to handle the power of a larger blower
 
i had that posted, it's not the right diagram for our blower. look at it.



as far as what will be done to the motor to support the blower, that depends. my build list will look like this:

- heavily ported heads (stock valves, 130# springs, stock rockers)
- custom high lift, high overlap cam (think NIC, but bigger)
- potentially headers, but i am unsure if i actually care to install another set when a downpipe is sooooo easy
- no intercooler, not happening. i have a good thought that i will run 100% meth again though. im hoping rocket will help me out with that. ;)
 
Why would you bore our block?

Its already thin enough as it is.

With a nice set of heads and a large NIC style cam I cant see why a tvs 1900 wouldnt work.

Now the downside: they're slightly quieter than gen V's with much less harmonics.

Which would push you towards a KB.

No intercooler makes adapting the thing that much easier.

you just need to measure a gen III from the outlet to the halfway point on the pulley.

thats your "r" length if you were talking with magnuson.
