Lets talk about temps!!!

I'm looking for those who are running the 180* thermostat. What kind of temps are you guys running when driving in the city and also when driving on the highway. Also, do you folks see a rise in temps when accelerating? If so how much or an increase and then how long until it goes back down to normal?

Thanks for any info :th_thumb-up:

it usually hovers under 200* still. it really doesnt get that hot unless youre giving it a reason to be.

mind you, i also have a smaller radiator than you do since my car is a GT.

I recently (this past weekend) flushed out my cooling system. before flushing it would run 210 give or take a few degrees all the time. now, it hasnt touched 200.

I have a non drilled 180* with the appropriate PCM settings and mine stay sright around 180*. However with the A/C on I see right aound 204*. I have an I/C so the front mount heat exchanger blocks some of the air flow.

Hmm, mine cools down if i travel at a constant speed but it seems when my engine revs 2000 rpm and above my engine increases in temp by say 3-4*. Now lets say that from a stop I start moving and for the next 3/4 to 1 mile there is a slight incline (you know enough to make the rpms stay around 2000 rpm) the temps will increase from 183* to 189* and would go higher if it was longer. Say I'm in traffic and the rpms stay anywhere above 2000rpm I will see temp rise to about 198*. Once it gets to these temps it will cool down to 180-183*, but it takes forever even going 50-60mph. It seems that the key to cooling down is to keep the rpms at around 1500 -1900, anything above that will increase my temps.

I have changed to the 1 3/8" radiator and installed the better 99&^ fans and even got the better lower air dam and changed the thermo once again. With all of these added it seems to get a little better. But just a couple months ago that temp didn't move 1 bit. just incase you were wondering tho, yes the gauge moves up in temp but when I put my scanner on it also moves up. So I know exactly what temp it is.

A year ago I did a coolant flush and changed my coolant to Peak Global and added a bottle of Auto Zone's (Water Wetter). I have taken this thing apart to do the rad, thermo 2 times and the hoses and my coolant and all the internals that I can see look like brand new so its hard for me to belive that it is plugged with anything.

Some people have told me that my heater core could be plugged but I dont understand how that would make me run hot. I also have a TB spacer that blocks off the coolant coming out of the SC, but I have had it since I got it 2 yrs ago so I cant see that doing it either.

This is really frustrating me :th_angry-cussing: Thanks for the info and thanks for any other ideas.

no big deal as far as I can see. 220 is what I consider HOT. just make sure the overflow tank is full as well as the radiator. and I dont think with that little of a temp rise that the coolant system would have an air pocket in it. Also try using a synthec oil in your engine and trans. less friction less heat.

When we got my 98 gp the cap on the overflow tank didnt have the tube on it that lets the cooling system suck fluid from the tank to keep it cool. I would say check all the lines and hoses, as well as the fins on the air conditioner radiator thingy.

Also when I raced dirt track adn the car would get hot during caution laps I would pull to the top of the track and rev my engine up adn down. the purpose of said is to circulate the water faster and get the engine cooled down. I would also try to run arund225 f in gasoline cars.

But I still have to say that a max of 190 is nothing to be concerned about. Unless I am mistaken (never used) wetter water is suposed to be used with just water.

Yeah it's programmed into the computer. Here's the weird thing.....I had just accelerated and shortly after that I turned into a walmart parking lot and let it idle (to see if the temp would come down) it didn't infact it creeped up real slow. So for the hell of it I just turned the temp dial from cold to hot and the temp started to come down. Is this normal?

Yeah...esp with the hot temps of summer and sitting in traffic. I have a 180* stat and manual fan switch and sitting in traffic mine will creep up just a little. I used to have a Mitsu Galant that had a bad thermostat prob, so I had to run the heat full blast for 3 days so the car wouldnt over heat, till the part got here. Mind you this was in the middle of July lol.
