• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Let's play the guessing game!

My 2007 GT has developed a whine, passenger side of engine. Car has 100k miles.
Power steering pump? fluid full, no leaks.
Alternator? correct voltage, no weird electrical problems going on.
Water pump? fluid full, no leaks

the car only starts to whine after car has been driven awhile. it does it going straight, turning, but only under some load.
when coasting and at idle you can turn wheel back and forth and here nothing. give it a little gas while coasting and at idle and it whines.
i originally thought power steering pump, but no noise turning while coasting and at idle cutting wheels kinda threw me a curve.
i am thinking alternator bearings? Will a water pump whine like that?
just want some opinions before i start slinging parts at it. Thanks

My 06 has a slight whine too at 72k I'm pretty sure the power steering pump
Fluid needs changed it gets burnt and worn out and loess viscosity

If turning the wheel has 0 effect under all conditions its most likely not the pump. A true whine is usually a tensioner pulley bearing or something. Fastest way to check is to get under the hood and with a long pry bar or stethoscope, touch it to each component and put your ear to it and listen where it's the loudest

That was our impala with a noisy tensioner pulley bearing

Sitting running at idle you can't hear anything. Rev the motor just a little bit and it whines. The whining sounds just like a power steering pump, but I think it's coming from alternator. Guess I'll just drive it till it dies completely.

Well you said sitting and idling doesn't do it...so I said go under the hood. Being you have a series III, you cannot rev it while under the hood which makes my procedure impossible with one person. Therefore you need a helper to hit the gas while you listen. But you could put something on the pedal to kind of get the same result
