Leaking gas if pump is left on

Please help me with this issue. If I leave the gas pump on, it will fill up, then leak under the car. It doesn't leak at the end of the neck, so there's gotta be a hole in the neck somewhere, would be my guess.

I do have an emissions code, evap I believe (it's been a while since the car was scanned, CEL has always been on).

Sure, I could just watch how much gas I'm at when filling up, but I want to get this fixed, which will also remove my CEL.
 


I want to make sure that's the issue, I just need help with diagnosing it. I don't want to purposely overflow my gas at the gas station and go under my car with a light looking for the leak. LOL
 
Yes quik, that could be possible. I had to change the sending unit because my gauge wasn't working properly. I'll definitely look into that.
 


If you can't get a hold of a smoke machine. they happen to be sorta expensive. You can modify a Halloween fog machine. That's what I have done in the past. Although I cant say I know how good Halloween fog is for your car. It does work lol.
 
So it is my fuel pump assembly that isn't sealed to the tank, thus overflowing the tank when I fill all the way up. What should I do to seal it? RTV?

Where does the leak appear to be happening. Middle of the are or near the fuel tank door?

Jack and support the back of the car. Pull the driverside tire. Remove the plastic wheel well and inspect the filler tube and the hoses to the tank.
Look at the tank, does it appear fluid ran down the filler tube and dripped off the tank, only dripped off the tank..

These are your indicators. No smoke machine is needed, a few basic tools and some decent eye sight is all.

I didn't notice an o-ring when I reinstalled the pump, it's a rubber o-ring, correct? It's possible I damaged it or it fell off but I can't be sure. I'll take a look once my tank is lower on gas, I just filled up.

I filled up yesterday and looked on the ground and there was a lot of gas under the middle of the car. I'm going to check out the fill neck like you said because I guess that's also possible.
 
Well, the filler neck is not leaking, there are no signs of leaks and I just made it leak yesterday, so that's ruled out. I'm still thinking it's the o-ring at the top of the tank. The gas pump will turn off after it leaks out a little bit under the car, so the leak is obviously near or at the top somewhere. My lines have never leaked either.


@BillBoost37, look at what I found when investigating the neck:



This is the evap canister isn't it? The big tube was not connected. Glad I went under there.
 
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the first pic is a tank seal for 98-00, and second is 01-03... My 2000 did the same thing, the o-ring slid down the pump during install. The pump would click off after losing fuel out the top, but I did get a few extra miles that tank since it was completely full :th_thumbsup-wink:

Ok excellent, that's probably it. It'll be a few days before I can do anything cause my tank is still full.
