L67 with 191k. Worth the rebuild?

So I know everyone says not to rebuild the bottom end on these blocks because you just cause yourself a lot of problems. However, I want to make big power with a turbo setup and am afraid 191k says that a lot of parts are tired. There is nothing wrong with the engine that I am aware of, I am just afraid of putting all this power in and having something like a bearing go.

Really, I want to rebuild the L67 and do a turbo setup because I am afraid the L36 in my GT will not be able to handle the turbo. If the L36 can handle 500hp, that would be fine. I would never push this car over that (at least not at this moment lol). I would top swap the L36, but for the money, turbos seem to be what everyone points to.

Any opinions?

its a waster of money, dont bother. turbo what you got till it pops. then get a low miles n/a engine and just use that with your turbo if you every have too.

a 3 or 400 dollar used engine is far better then a over 2 grand rebuilt bottom end. ( your not rebuilding it in your garage) it need lots of machine shop work.

The L36 only has 86k on it. So the L36 rods will be able to handle the horsepower?

And yeah that was my fear. I'm not crazy enough to try to rebuild something like the bottom end in my garage. My co-worker insists it is easy and he has the knowledge, but I disagree with him. I just want to make sure I don't pop something shortly after doing this install.

your friend is dead wrong, this is not a 350 Chevy bottom end..........needs shop time...or make a bet with him, he can build it for you at his cost, if it lasts more then 500 miles you'll pay him, and when it blows up, hes buying you another engine too, .....see if he will take that BET cause the fail rate is that high. we call it a 200 mile engine. seen it happen every time ones rebuilt in the garage with zero machine shop work done.

Lol I am on your side. I know these engines are ticking time-bombs when you do them yourself, I have read up some on it haha.

He also says you should throw away 70% of what you read on these forums. I love these forums, best reference ever. He also said the oil pump was driven by the camshaft. Insisted that was wrong because I just got done doing a cam swap. And his GT has 2.93s. Also proved him wrong on that one. Let's just say I don't take his words of advice. We just both like Grand Prixs.

And that is the sickest project car ever.

on old high miles engines too.

offer your friend that bet, see if he bites......the forum said so lol

he really thinks its a 305 block with two cylinders cut off dont he?? lol

Are those L36s he is using?

And yeah, I would do it but I don't wanna piss him off lol. Fortunately we are friends, we just disagree on ALOT (obviously).

im not sure, hes got a build thread for the whole car too. could be n/a engines. people turbo them all the time. more bang for your buck over a top swap. but costs more.

I don't think 191K is high for these motors, unless a previous owner really beat on the car. I'm at 277K on my motor, no engine problems and still runs great.

Of course, I'm just running the equivalent of a typical 3.4 pulley setup, the power of a turbo might be a different ball game.

Stock trans still at that 277k miles?

Yes, actually. Lately the trans has been getting kinda goofy on hot days, TCC Lockup issues, codes etc... but excellent considering the age/mileage. Now that things are cooling down, it's behaving itself again. lol

wow thats impressive. I barely believe that you still have your 4th gear haha. Gives me hope for my 156k car :P

I think the key is partly luck, probably more that the previous owners kept the vehicle stock and didn't beat on it. Lots of highway miles. No fancy transmission coolers or anything. They changed the trans fluid every 100k (twice), and I pan drop every 30k or so. Pulled the remains of a thrust bearing out of my last trans filter, so it's certainly not going to live forever.
