Key To "Accessory" Question

Just some quick background:

02' GP GT Coupe
Bought Used
Alarm Inoperable
Only Came With One Valet Key
Key Fits Doors, Ignition, etc.

So I get two new Fobs to program so I can at least use the door lock/unlock feature. Problem is that the key won't turn counterclockwise to the ACCESSORY position. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I checked the manual and it shows 5 positions, ACC, Locked, Unlocked for towing, ON, and Start. Being that I have only the Valet key I figured maybe that was the problem or the cylinder was changed, but it fits the doors and trunk with no problem. So I can't get the car in "program" mode to do the Fobs. Has this maybe happened to someone else?? Thanks.

so the only key you have is not a chipped key? how does it stay running then? does the security light flash? seems odd.

this link is for a new key, its got a transponder in it for security purposes. you should always have more than one set of keys. you never know when stuff gonna grows legs and walks off.

you may even have to go to the dealer for this key to be cut/buy it from them. they can cut a new key from your vin # and program it to work.

when i got a new key for my car, i needed the old vat key to make the new key work, without another chipped key you cant do it yourself.

Thats correct. I am using a "Non Transponder" key and the Security light flashes continually while driving. It's how I bought the car. The previous owner also bought the car in this condition. I am the third owner now. I already took apart the dash to see if I could find signs of "jumping wires with resistors", or a aftermarket remote start system. I found nothing tampered with and no Transponder key hidden. I'm going to have an alarm system installed on Saturday but I was just wondering about this key issue in the meantime. It sucks not being able to get it into Accessory.

i'd head off to the dealer and get a new key from them, im thinking your going to have problems with a new security system if the old one is messed up. a new key may let you turn it back to acc as well.

my key pulls out of the ignition and the car will still run but the light will flash non stop.

Thanks.I'm going to call the dealer to see what they would charge for the new key and getting the theft system back in order. Maybe it's cheaper than the new alarm system............Okay, thats a big maybe! Thanks again.

well most likley problem is wrong key, but in older gp had a key lock problem, wouldnt alow me to turn back all the time. i tried until i got it. wiggle it around and see if you can get it to turn back.

from other posts in the past, dealer should be around 50 to 60 for the key, i have no idea what they would charge to program it so it works.

this is from the site i posted.

[h=3]Key Cutting/Programming[/h]Programming this key requires 1 working key. If you do not have 1 working key, you will need to have the key programmed at a locksmith or dealership. The actual procedure takes a few seconds to complete and many dealerships will do it for free as a courtesy. If your dealer does charge a fee, local locksmiths usually charge much less to remain competitive.

if you get a key from them, then call the dealer get your key code, ( you need your vin #) a lock smith can cut it for about $15, i think i paid last time i did this.

and if the lock smith cant program it the dealer can, at least now you have the key for less then full price.

Thanks again. I just spoke to the service guy at the local Pontiac Dealer. He said its 69 dollars for programming and anywhere up to 40 for the key. So I have a decision to make. I may just drop it off and let them do it.

FWIW, I have to jiggle the hell out of my ignition to get it to go into accessory. Maybe you have the same problem.

I'll try that as soon as I get home, thanks!

I just LOVE dealerships. I called back to find out what time they open in the morning Friday and got a different guy. He asked me the situation and then tells me it will be $125 for the programming plus the new key. I told him I just hung up with another guy and he told me $69 dollars. He said that 69 dollars is for a half hour and that mine would be an hour. Amazing how smart they are at the dealership! Gotta love them.

try the lock smith out.

the dealer will give you your key code for free. and you can call other dealers, any GM dealer can give you this info.

what happened to me was i had just got a new truck, had not put the hide a key on it yet, and locked the keys inside. i live in NJ and i was on long island NY, so i was stuck.

called the dealer, they gave me the code, i called a few lock smiths, found one 4 blocks away who sold and cut me a new key. cost around 20 bucks i think. but i was only getting a Valet key. not a chipped key.

now if he can program it he should be cheaper.

oh home depot sells chipped keys too for about $30 iirc. at their key counter, by the tool shed most of the time.

just replace it yourself if its broke, but i would jiggle and mess with it first, got mine into assc. once and only once when i had to program my fobs.

Too late. Thanks. My son just left for the dealer to get the key. They had one left for my VIN for 29 bucks. We'll see what happens.

Gonna try the "jiggling" when I get home. The weather is great so I have the bike today, otherwise I would have run out to see.

Well my son came and brought me the Transponder Key from the dealership this afternoon. When we got home I inserted the key in the trunk and it magically opened! It will not open the trunk with the Valet key at all. So I guess thats a good sign. I next tried the door and it opened it as well. Being that I know nothing about these cars I didn't try it in the ignition. I wasn't sure if it would disable anything and I need to bring it in for programming Friday morning. I'm real curious if it would have gone into ACCESSORY but I won't try it unless I'm sure I won't mess anything up with the ignition or starting the car. Two more days won't kill me I guess. If they are able to program the key and get the factory theft system to work it will have cost me 100 bucks as opposed to 150 for installing an aftermarket alarm system. Thanks for all the help here. You guys are awesome!

just turning the key back i think would be ok. its just power to the accessories.

and being that its not programmed i dont think anything bad can happen if you use the key to run the car, except for the security light flashing and it already does that lol

now go make your fobs work lol

Thats what I was looking to hear! I'm on my way down to see what happens. Be back in a few. Thanks Scotty!

I sent the kid downstairs instead to try the Passkey and he gave me the "thumbs down" signal. I guess it's up to the dealer to figure it out. I really wanted to program those friggin Fobs this evening!

push the key in and back and give that some jiggle action.

it may take some force to get it to turn back.

almost forgot graphite lock spray works frigging wonders too.
