Key Fob Issues

For a little over a year now, my key fobs have been malfunctioning. I've changed batteries, rotated fobs, but still have the issue of my lock and unlock buttons not working. My alarm and trunk work just fine. My auto start button works, but you have to lock the doors, then press that button, so the function is useless at the moment. What am I doing wrong? Do I need a new fob? Does it need to be reprogrammed? I just got a new car battery this week, and thought that might help, but still same results :/
 


you can open up the key fob, and clean the pad buttons and the board where the buttons touch when you press them with rubbing alcohol and a Q tip.

then try them out again.

sometimes a new pad is need, they sell them for like 5 bucks on e bay. or you can glue tin foil to the button pads. the button pads come with metal paint on them it wears off over time, the tin foil trick works well if need be. i have my extra fob rigged up that way.
 
Thank you! I'll have to try that when I get home. I have no fear of opening it up. A cell phone case opener works well to get in the grove to pop it open.
 
My car unlocks now! :D still can't lock the door, which is what I need so I can auto start it. I'll have to work on my other fob when I get home. Maybe try and switch the buttons... Work in progress!
 


For the record, this totally fixed my issue! Yay! I initially cleaned the keyboard contacts with some rubbing alcohol last week, but when I reopened it, they looked cloudy, so I used a regular eraser to buff them up, and they're shiny now. Combined with the foil glued to the fob buttons = results! Thank you!!
 
What did you use for glue? Mine will work with foil for a few days, and then the foil (or the conductive paint) falls out of place.
 
i used crazy glue, but if you buy that foil tape, it sticks real good. like glue really.

a dab on the button, then put the foil on the button, let it sit for a few minutes, all done.

or you can buy a new fob pad for a bout 5 bucks on e bay.
 
I used elmers glue, but it didn't keep the foil on the buttons. I ended up going on ebay, and now I have a key fob of a cool color.
 


i picked up a new pad, but that wore out fast, its now the spare with glued foil on the buttons.

the "new fob" that i got off ebay is still kicking strong for well over a year now. think i paid 15 for it. the outside of the buttons are fading off some, but it still works well.
 
I got my ebay key fob in Jan, and it's still going strong. It's a bright blue, and looks awesome compared to the black one I had. It was easy to gut the OEM one, and transfer.
 
I've resoldered the battery tabs back into place a few times now and they usually hold for about a year. I try to be careful to not hold an iron on any longer than I need to as it may melt other parts of the fob. I honestly can believe I soldered something back in place and it works - thing looks fragile.

Anyone else done this?

I soldered the battery holding clip back on. Since then my alarm goes off periodically. So I took the battery out of it. I'll see how that goes.
