Just picked up a 04 Comp G...

Hi all,

I just picked up an 04 Comp G for my son. Its his first car and one of a dozen Pontiacs I have owned, hopefully that trend continues :th_winking:.

Anyway a few questions. The car has 152k on it. It is a one owner car. The trans was recently rebuilt, new hubs, fuel pump, water pump, tune up, coil packs and intake gasket. I was told the valves, springs, supercharger and pistons where also replaced. Is there anyway to tell if the supercharger is original or aftermarket?

The car does have a few lights on. The famous ABS/TRACTION CONTROL and CHECK ENGINE are both on. With the hubs being replaced I am assuming the ABS control module is bad or there is a loose/broken wire. The original owner told me the light has been on even before the hubs were replaced.

The car stumbles a bit when its started, plus I noticed the supercharger doesn't spool out completely. There was no boost yesterday when I first started it then after a few minutes, presto! boost. Also the car wouldn't immediately drop into a lower gear when I punched it but did when the boost was back. The light comes on and stays on steady which from what I understand that means its an emisssions issue, correct? I need to get the codes pulled to see whats up. The car runs nice and and is tight for the mileage, I can tell it was cared for.

Any thoughts on what I should look for?

Pull the codes first. Most parts stores have code readers you can use to pull them, write them down and post them and we can give some advice.

most of what your describing sounds like a simple vacuum leak issue, but can't really say anything for certain without knowing what codes are being thrown.

No boost most of the time means your looking for a vacuum leak as stated. Spray some carb cleaner around the engine bay to see if the idle changes where you spray...if it DOES, then you've found what your looking for. These cars suffer from dry rotted plastic parts...it's common.

The ABS/TCS light is mostly from probably a clipped/torn wire not connected in one of the hub assembly's...most likely the fronts since they are the ones that commonly go bad. The SES light...go get that checked at your local auto parts store...most likely your going to get a Bank 1 System Lean pop up...which is caused from the vacuum leak and no boost....and just my 2 cents...if the car was well taken care of...I don't see why the supercharger and pistons needed replacing IMO...should still be all original at 150k...these cars run forever.

As for the factory blower...you'd be looking for a Generation V Eaton M90...looks like so(red one on the bottom; GenIII Eaton M90 is on top from the 97-03 Supercharged cars):

Thanks for all the info and pics! Not sure why he changed the pistons, supercharger, valves, etc... You are right these engines go forever. He told me his mechanic told him since they had to replace the intake gasket they might as well upgrade those parts. He also said he had the heads and supercharger "flowed". The previous owner is a "speed freak" he had alot of other go fast goodies in his garage.

I owned one of these cars in 04 for 2 1/2 years and put 100k on it. I remember it was fairly quick, If I remember right I would say mid to low 14's stock? This one is quicker according to the butt dyno, so he did do something to it. He is having all the paperwork sent to me. A freind of his family who works at SLP apparently did the work for him so he didn't have the paperwork handy.

I will check the SC tonight when I get home and try the carb cleaner on the vac lines. I had a 90 Turbo GP that had the same problem, took me forever to find the damn leak...

Sons first car is a Boosted pontiac... Lucky.... Im jelly.... just saying

I agree... my first car was an orange 78 Datsun 200 SX... Athough I remember being a punk. He just completed his Eagle rank in scouts, honor role at school and saved the money for the car. So for now he deseves it. I told him the first speeding ticket though.... oh boy...lol

You could check the supercharger pulley size. stock is 3.8. Also, very nice cars in your sig. everyone here is jelly i can tell you that.

Like said stock pulley is a 3.8... you should get a modular pulley system on it and up it like a 4.5 or 5.0 :th_laugh-lol2: itll keep him from going fast ROFLMAO j/k /jk

take off the belt :th_jester:

When he can figure out how to put one on...then he has earned the privelage of boost.

How do I check the pulley size? Thanks for the compliments on my other cars. The G8 is my baby. I love that car! It does low 12's at the track and took down an 2012 Mustang GT last week, only two car lenghts but the look on his face was priceless! Aways been a huge Pontiac fan. The Camaro was a recent add. I was looking for a DD to replace my aged Bonni and thought I settled on a 09 CTS but parked right next to it was the Bumblebee with 2300 miles on it. Its a 6M and I got it for under 30k, I just couldn't pass up the deal. Plus my kids love transformers.

I came very close to trading the G8 in and getting a Trans Am concepts Hurst TA. I had made all the arrangements but backed out at the last minute. I just couldn't part with my G8 plus 68k for a modded Camaro was alot of coin. Now I have the best of both worlds!

Back to my issue. I was able to get to a Advanced auto but 5 min before they closed. I didn't get to right the code numbers down but it came up with bad wheel speed sensors, both front wheels one other code referncing the stabilitrack and an ox sensor in bank 1. I am thinking the O2 sensor is causing the hesitation. The wheel speed sensors are a bit odd since the hubs were replaced 9 months ago. I have to vheck the wires. Could it be a faulty module? Is there a way to check them?

the way to check the pulley size is by
A: measuring it
B: look on it and see if there is a number like 3.8 or 3.4 or something.
