Just Bought a new ( to me ) 2006 GXP.. What do I need to know?

SO I just bought a very nice 06 GXP for a very good price.. I couldn't pass it up even tho Ive heard some horror stories about the transmission, Active fuel management, oil pan seal or something, Lifters taking a **** etc etc.. Car runs and feels awesome, but I am preparing for the worst. SO

Who makes a built transmission for the LS4 so I wont have any future issues..

What is the AFM issue that I see so much, and what can be done to help it..

If I were to pull the motor, and rebuild. ( currently at 170K ) what would I want to replace, other the the obvious gaskets seals, rings, etc

Who Would be a good person or vendor to talk to about modding and tuning..

Thanks alot everyone, and its good to be back, even tho its not on the 3800 platform ( which I did miss quite a bit ) :)

Triple edge performance for the trans if you want quality. Installing it will be your other hassle.

AFM/DoD is just where it shuts 4 cylinders off on the freeway for MPGS, it can cause problems and burn lots of oil and solenoids can go bad. The best thing to do is just turn it off in a tune.

If you pulled the motor, only do seals is needed. Never a real need to put new bearings in it or do lifters etc if they didnt make noise before. I would bet money that the cross hatching would still be on the cylinder walls.

I have no idea if you planned to mod the motor or anything but if you lived close to me which I don't think you do. I could shut off the DOD with my hp tuners and do a minor tune without going deep, because lack there of wideband for fuel.

Awesome .. Thanks alot guys.... Im sure Ill have more random questions as time goes by, but thats good info right off the bat... Thanks again

Love that color in GXP format.

Ha, thanks man.. Me too.. As you can see in my Ava with my past GP, I'm partial to white...

car is awesome so far, but just preparing for the worst from what I hear lol

Ive wanted a GXP for quite a long time, and am glad to finally have one.. and to have back a GP in general

Just a heads up.. I live in DUluth and would be more than happy to come down for a tune.. Rogers is just a weekend getaway for us :)

Dumb question.. But is this the same motor thats in all the 5.3 Chev trucks>? Or is it a LS4 vs a LQ4? I cant remember all the L sub divisions lol

Sorta the same but alot different. The size is just the same.

The LQ4 is a 6.0.

That 5.3 is a aluminum block unlike the iron block 5.3's in the trucks. Only other 5.3's on the denali envoys and trailblazers got a AL block. Kinda everything about is special, front cover, water pump, power stering stuff, flex plate, oil pan etc are all made just for being stuffed in a FWD car. In short, it's a truck motor but in a car and weights alot less but makes roughly the same power.

Gotcha. Thanks.

Like I said. Its not bad now. Shifts really good actually. So from what I've been reading the majority of people say it lasts 70k before any issues. I'm at 170k and it feels fine to me leading me to believe its been changed at some point.

Only weirs thing. To me at least since I've never experienced it in any of my other cars is when I put it in drive, and release the brake. It doesn't roll forward. (Yes its on level ground :) ) is this normal, or maybe a converter issue?

Other than that, like I said all seems well in the trans.

One more thing. Only flaw on the interior is the center console /armrest. Best spot to track one down being a junkyard or eBay?

Well depends..

Technically you have the one that has the tan stitching in it that matches the seats stitching/ steering wheel etc. so if you want to keep that then stick with finding one from a 06/08. If that doesn't bother you then any from a 04-08 will work.

I wouldn't be surprised if it cost u a pretty penny finding one in good condition.

Tanks man. And yea. This isn't the typical "dime a dozen" GM part I'm usually looking for. I'm seeing about $80 on ebay

Yup lol for whatever reason guys seem to tear them or break them. Dk her mine looks very good still but I'm on the hunt for the one with white Stan stitching to match everything else.
