Just Bought a Grand Prix

Yesterday I went to a dealer close by to purchase a 2008 Aveo5. The price seemed right until they added around $2500 in add ons. It went from $5915 sticker to over $8000. I was pretty shocked by that and tried walking away. The dealer (they seemed like good folks) started asking me about what we were trying to do and what we could afford etc..... Well he asked me to look at a Grand Prix they just took in on trade. The dealer had done nothing to the car and it looked really good. Then I drove it and it drove very nice and was decked out with way more features than I deserved. When they got all the figures together, with our down payment the cost was only $98 a month for 2 years.

My wife was harping on me to get the car, she didn't want me driving an Aveo!! She liked the car and the value was pretty reasonable.

Well, I now own a 2006 Grand Prix, 64,000 miles on it. 3 previous owners all in a retirement community just west of Phoenix. It has the 3.8 liter V6. The more I fdrive it the better I like itl.

I have one question, I want to run synthetic oil in the crankcase. Anything I should know before I do this, and does the mileage indicate any reason why I can't? Thaks for the answers in advance!!

Running synthetic oil is a good idea, you can change at anytime and nothing special needs to be done. In fact, many people here run synthetic oil. I do, and in the winter months around here it is definitely worth the extra coin.

Hey thanks for the warm welcome. I'm not a car guy but I can do a good majority of my own work when I have the time and the motivation.

That was the only GP on the lot but I did see a lot more on the internet. I was intreged to find out later that they offer a turbo charger on this model. Sorry that this one did not have a heads up display, that seemed like a pretty cool option too.

Other than a couple of rattles here and there and a ticking noise in the stering column everything seems to be in pretty good shape. I'm always nervous about buying other peoples problems. After reading some of the evaulations and opinions on this car I am more confident that I made a good decision. I'm hoping for at least another 4-6 years out of it.

Thanks for the info on the oil. Something I had not researched and I wanted to make sure I didn't create a problem making the switch. For all I know the previous owner may have already used synthetic.

One funny note, a friend the other night pulled the cover over the top of the engine and found where mice had been starting a nest. What gave it away was the marks in the foam pad and then finding the startings of a nest near the intake manifold in the front. No harness damage that was seen or noticed so the didn't attack anything vital. I guess this car sat for a while somewhere.

Sorry to posts these pics, but the only Aveo I would ever drive is the new Aveo RS:
