My check engine light has been on for awhile now. Then this morning my car started making a ticking noise when I started it and as I was driving down the road the engine light started flashing and my car was sputtering and ticking louder and shaking and smelt bad so I went home and parked it any ideas please help

Pull codes. The check engine light has been telling you to do that for awhile now...

You have misfires going on, but the codes will help you figure out what to do to fix it.

Moral of the story, don't ignore warning lights like that.

If a plug wire is cracking and you are getting crossfiring, it'll make a ticking noise. I cracked coil pack would cause the cross firing too and make a ticking noise. The blinking indicates a misfire, it's just tracking down what is causing the misfire now.

It could be, pull them and check them out. It's gonna take some investigating to see what the problem is. There are quite a few things that could cause misfires, that's why pulling codes would most likely point you in the right direction.

I'd say there is a pending code, likely for something like a bad o2 sensor.. which ignored flooded your cat with raw fuel and smoked that little kitty cat.

Pull the codes and we can tell you what actually happened.

make sure the plug wires not melted on a manifold, then pull the plug and look at it, swap the plug with the cylinder next to it, if the misfire dont move, swap the plug wire.

if its been a long time or you've never done a tune up, it sounds like it time.

well mechanic told to pull the plug out and look at it and that will soon tell me but not to sure what I am looking for. But on another note it wasn't fun as the plug broke at the top and it was hard as hell to get out. I took a front plug out and it was rusted at the nut part of the plug and that one broke off at the top half too

no not yet it was getting dark out so I had to stop. they are not fun getting out I am almost certain they have been in for awhile and by the looks of it there are two different brands of plugs in there

mine had 4 of one, 2 of another. clearly the back plugs were a issue. most of us can have plugs done in like 15 minutes. hop to it hammer.

did you pull the engine forward? that helps add a few inches of room in the back and lets you see better.

if your using a real spark plug socket, the kind with a foam insert and a bolt head on the top, you can use a wrench on the socket where its all tight to the o2 sensor.

i was always able to break it free by just putting the socket on the plug, then with a ratchet and 3 inch extension with just the tip of it in the socket.

being you said you broke the plug my best guess is your using a normal deep socket, or a old plug socket with no foam inside it.
