Issue Programming New Key 04 GP

So i've read everything I can find and I'm still at a loss. My wife lost our only (yes I know first mistake right there) set of car keys and I need my car to run. I tried with a locksmith yesterday and that was just a waste of 6 hours of my day. This morning I went to the dealership and got a new PK3 key for $50 but they can't program it without the car there and I wanted to try to do this without having to pay more money to get the car towed. When the locksmith tried to program the new key he only saw the typical security message about the vehicle being disabled and it would never go off like the guides say it would. Today with the new key I initially got that message and it wouldn't go off for a while, then i randomly turned the key over and it cranked the car. So now where I'm sitting right now the car will crank (but not start obviously) and the message I see says Theft Device Not Programmed. Yet I still don't seem to get either message to "go away after about 10 minutes" for the reprogramming of the key so I can drive it off. Is there something I'm missing or doing wrong in the process here?

Iirc to program a new pk3 key without a tech 2 you need to insert a master key and turn to the on position, then remove the master key and insert the new key immediately after to the on position. Then your key is programmed. However, in your situation you need to have a dealer program it.

From what I learned yesterday and the guy at the dealership seemed to agree it was possible. I should be able to stick the new key into the ignition and turn it to the on position. 10 minutes later the security message should go off and you are supposed to turn the key to the off position within 1minute of this and rinse and repeat 2 more times for a total of about 30 minutes, then remove the key and it should fire the car right up. I've seen this in a book and multiple other places, but don't seem to be having luck actually making it happen.

Nope you didn’t miss a thing. Never ever lose your last key. Really bad idea, as you have found out. Any locksmith worth his salt can program a spare key, but without one coded key to work from it is game over. You need to get your car and key to a dealership, or turn your car into a giant door stop. Your choice :th_jester:

IIRC that might work for the 97-03 with PK3.

So I went ahead and dropped another 60 for the tow and then the dealership charged me 125 to program the new key bringing my weekend total up to 285. Car is running now, the guy at the dealership said something in the theft deterrant went amiss and caused it to not let me do the 30 minute self fix. Thanks for the ideas and input on the situation.
