I have been having trouble with my trans. I took it in to have it tested. results show it is on it's way out, just begining to go. What I want to know is if anyone knows that a 1999 transmission is..... year specific. they told me that this year trans, if I where to try and get a another one(used let's say) that I have to get the same year trans. no other year will work in it. Does anyone know if that is right? plus if anyone has had they're trans. rebuilt if $2067.00 () for a 2year or 24,000mi. rebuild is a good price. any help, point,or advice is greatly appreciated. thank you,Mikki

IIRC, theres a difference b/t the cooling lines, i think the 98 and 99+. cant remember the year difference, but trannyman or someone else should chime in to confirm.

Trannyman is a bit over 400 miles from you, about one tank of gas or so. If I were that close, I would bring my check book to an account that had $1500 in it and head over to Fort Wayne, IN and have him rebuild your tranny. Of course I would make some accommodations for a day or two stay if you can so you would need money for that and I would get in touch with him to schedule a time to be there.

You can spend $2000+ at the shop you went to and get the same tranny back that you had (of course working better) or you can save a bit of money and go and get one that will blow away the factory build.

I wish I lived that close or closer to him, I would have been back on the road already.

hollander interchange shows the '99 to be a '99 only

hmmm.... that's interesting.

i have an early 99 MY trans in my 97 GTP, and a 97 MY trans in my early 99 MY regal GS.

the important difference is the cooler lines. 97 to early 99 MY had regular threaded fittings. late 99 MY started the quick disconnect lines. problem is, you cant use the quick disconnect fittings on a trans that wasnt designed with them, the checkball in the trans fitting restricts flow too much. so if your car has the later quick disconnect style fittings, either you need a trans that has the same quick disconnects, or if you get an older trans that doesnt have the quick disconnects, you have to change out the lines on the car to the older style non quick disconnects.....

Not real sure why they would say that as 97-99 is a direct swap, 00-02 will work with certain cooler line fittings. As Toasty mentioned the 97-99 has a thread in style cooler line fitting and the 00+ transmissions have a quick connect type cooler line fitting. All 97-02 GTP/GS / L67 powered transmissions came with the larger 258mm torque converter and a 2.93 overall gear ratio. Physically all the same in that year range and electrically the same also. I use various year cores all the time for trans builds depending on core availability though I try to keep things close or the same, as long as the correct cooler fitting is used the year isnt really important.

I did a 2001 trans. in my 97.5 and retained the newer line...just removed the check ball in the quick disconnect line.

To answer you original question yes!!! they are correct, but I don't think it matters if you swap a 97 4l65e with a 2002 4l65e as long as you use the whole unit as far as the comp goes. I'm not going to explain because everyone here is such a genious and they will prove me wrong, but what the shop is trying to explain to you is why mess with refabrication on a unit you think is good when they could rebuild yours for the price they give... which is a fair price!! You can listen to whomever you want, but the cheapest price a shop and i mean SHOP can do your rebuild is just under 2000, so get your tear down estimate and if the price isn't right you got options. You want answers about the real world? these 20 year olds won't help you, but if you want it straight! I'll look at any estimates you have got and point you in the right direction. atra.com is here for you we are a family
That's right i'm in a wheel chair!

Trannyman's web site says like 1500(I think just a basic rebuild), and he runs a real shop :) relax, we are not out to get you vermsta, we just make sure everything is accurate

Well, no offense but Trannyman is a repair shop, maybe not in the traditional sense in that he has locations across the U.S., but he is a shop and he most definitely below $2000.00 and will turn out a transmission better than any other shop can building it back to factory specs.

Again, no disrespect intended, I dont know if Trannyman is 20 or not, but he certainly is one of if not the most respected transmission builder in our community. Ask yourself why we have two vendors that offer built transmission and yet people NATIONWIDE flock to him to have their transmissions built?

He has consistently provided 'Real World' answers to this community for as long as I have been a part of it.

Sounds like you have a problem with people here? Or am I reading that wrong?

but the cheapest price a shop and i mean SHOP can do your rebuild is just under 2000,

Yes, you may be correct for a shop that is going to remove, rebuild, and re-install the tranny. The OP never specified. But I assume that is what the shop would do, and yes, that is a good price.

But for the money, I would take the tranny out myself, since it is not hard, and have Trannyman rebuild it. I think that is what most people here are getting at.

Again, it seems like you have a problem with the people here. I am in my 20s, and while I have never claimed to know it all, I have helped out hundreds of people in this community with what I have learned. And yes, these are real world answers. So just because I am under 30, doesn't mean I don't know what I am talking about...or anyone else for that matter.

these 20 year olds won't help you, but if you want it straight!

These 20 year olds also spend $40,000 on education, work 3 jobs and don't have time or money to waste, or even chance on a junk transmission. I've done my research and Trannyman is where I will be taking mine when it goes.

well I take offense due to the fact I am over 30, my rebuild with all new electricals was 2500 (every internal part replaced) so just a basic rebuild should be cheaper (because a real shop tends to fix what is wrong and if a part tests good leave it, and I speak from experience just talking to the shops getting prices on mine they told me that)

I'm not trying to earn your busniess or tell who not to go to and who to go to. I don't doubt trannyman does a good job, but everyone makes mistakes. I gurantee you he has comebacks, just like the rest of us. If you are in a position to use him for your rebuilds then I say do it, because there is nothing better than a reputable transmission shop. $1500 on the bench for the work he does is way cheap, but I'm talking installation. I spend $700 dollars minimum for parts and book time is 12-16hours on the job, so you do the math most shops are 100 an hour. You should expect to pay at least $2000 for the job. I'm here cuz I have questions just like the rest of you, but I wanted to give my two cents in return for the valuable info i have recieved here. I'm also in my 20s by the way so go figure *L* I'm talking like i'm a bad ask and i turn out to be the one i'm complaining about

Trannyman does installation, too. by the time most people on here add up transport costs to/from and installation from him, yeah your likely at about the 2K mark, but with a much better trans than most shops that would only be doing a factory rebuild, without updated/improved parts.

as far as the OP's question about a used trans, it might be hard to find a shop willing to put in that used trans, and if you did find one, i'd be inclined to think that they may not be the best place to go, unless it's family-- most shops that would swap a tranny need a good warranty policy, and wouldnt install a used trans.

assuming the 4T65-E HD here... (and assuming trans from a gtp/gs into same, or from GT into same)
i guess what i was getting at, and not typing so well, is that depending on when the 99 MY car the OP has was built, either early or late, the early 99MY will direct swap with 97-early 99 MY trans. bolt it up and go. if the car is a late 99MY, then the late 99MY-2002 MY trans will bolt up and go. the lines will connect just fine. no "refabrication" necessary. swapping from either side of that year cutoff only requires the lines/fittings reworked.

--- i know you're wanting to give it to people straight, and that's cool. but painting everybody here with a broad brush as if we dont know anything about transmissions/cars is a bit harsh. while pretty much all of us are not trans techs, that in no way means that we dont know anything about the transmissions in our cars. do you know more than most of us in regards to trasmissions? yep, probably, but that's no reason to figure we dont know anything about them. we welcome your suggestions, for sure. but we also welcome everybody else's as well.

stick around and have some fun, the bunch of people on this board are a lot of fun! :)

OK thanks to everyone that helped me out, I have decided to go ahead and get the trans. rebuilt at Pro-trans. They will do a complete rebuild with any updates and such included in the price of $2067.00. Thanks again all of you! I feel better making the decision.:th_thumbsup-wink:

It might, the output might be pointing the wrong way. Better to use a transversed transmission for these cars. :p

Anyway, I've got a '99 HD transmission in my '00 SE. I don't remember running across any issues when I installed it, it bolted right up, cooler lines and all.
