I'm not trying to earn your busniess or tell who not to go to and who to go to. I don't doubt trannyman does a good job, but everyone makes mistakes. I gurantee you he has comebacks, just like the rest of us. If you are in a position to use him for your rebuilds then I say do it, because there is nothing better than a reputable transmission shop. $1500 on the bench for the work he does is way cheap, but I'm talking installation. I spend $700 dollars minimum for parts and book time is 12-16hours on the job, so you do the math most shops are 100 an hour. You should expect to pay at least $2000 for the job. I'm here cuz I have questions just like the rest of you, but I wanted to give my two cents in return for the valuable info i have recieved here. I'm also in my 20s by the way so go figure *L* I'm talking like i'm a bad ask and i turn out to be the one i'm complaining about
Trannyman does installation, too. by the time most people on here add up transport costs to/from and installation from him, yeah your likely at about the 2K mark, but with a much better trans than most shops that would only be doing a factory rebuild, without updated/improved parts.
as far as the OP's question about a used trans, it might be hard to find a shop willing to put in that used trans, and if you did find one, i'd be inclined to think that they may not be the best place to go, unless it's family-- most shops that would swap a tranny need a good warranty policy, and wouldnt install a used trans.
assuming the 4T65-E HD here... (and assuming trans from a gtp/gs into same, or from GT into same)
i guess what i was getting at, and not typing so well, is that depending on when the 99 MY car the OP has was built, either early or late, the early 99MY will direct swap with 97-early 99 MY trans. bolt it up and go. if the car is a late 99MY, then the late 99MY-2002 MY trans will bolt up and go. the lines will connect just fine. no "refabrication" necessary. swapping from either side of that year cutoff only requires the lines/fittings reworked.
--- i know you're wanting to give it to people straight, and that's cool. but painting everybody here with a broad brush as if we dont know anything about transmissions/cars is a bit harsh. while pretty much all of us are not trans techs, that in no way means that we dont know anything about the transmissions in our cars. do you know more than most of us in regards to trasmissions? yep, probably, but that's no reason to figure we dont know
anything about them. we welcome your suggestions, for sure. but we also welcome everybody else's as well.
stick around and have some fun, the bunch of people on this board are a lot of fun!
