Changing the supercharger oil before I put it on and I heard 10w 30 synthetic will work fine. Is this ok?
 


never heard that before. i always use genuine gm supercharger oil. i would be curious to know if that is ok to do though because that would certainly be a bit cheaper
 
No it will not work the same. The supercharge oil is pretty much a high speed gear oil. Just use the right stuff and be done with it. GM supercharger oil that is.
 
yea use the recommended oil for it. prob like 10 bucks a bottle at gm. i paid 19 bucks 4 2 when i got my s/c rebuilt.
 
Well I know a few people that have been running 10w 30 full synthetic in the superchargers for almost a couple years now and haven't had any issues. I've heard it actually works better than the gm s/c oil. Idk, I'm gunna try it, I'll let youguys know what happens.

Nice, yeah I know a few people that've been doing that for years. A low 13's GT, a GTP, a high 12s cutlass, and now you. So I'll put some mobile 1 in it, and if anything for some reason happens these blowers are cheap.

Yeah, I usually always listen to everyone on here but I figured I'll give this a try since I wanna get this done and don't feel like waiting for s/c oil to ship. I'll probably put charger oil in it next time but for now I think this is good.
 
Interesting thread. I've been contemplating this for a while, i.e.: WTF is GM S/C oil?

It seems that S/C oil is basically a 5w-20 that takes longer to oxidize or vaporize. But primarily, is has low Thermal characteristics. IOW, it doesn't expand or contract with temperature. So, that rules out Mobil 1.

Hmm..Turbine oil. If it works in a F-22, I think it'll be o.k. for a Pontiac :-P
The Oil store 16 bucks a quart, or available at you local airport :)
 


Supercharger = Gears.
Gears = Oil

I used gear oil and if someone has anything to say about it i pose this question... Why would gear oil not be sufficient? It its meant for the crazy stress and high speed of a differential, and the only thing different about that and the m90 gears is that 1. Gears are smaller, not sure on speed might actually be slower. 2. Actually have alot less to no stress on them, especially when most driving is at cruise. Ive had no problems using gear oil and upon removal/ dissasembly found no evidence of wear. But if it makes you feel better, use the GM S/C oil.
 
There are plenty of oils that may work, but GM SC oil has been engineered and proven to work. I doubt any of the people running other oils have done any significant testing (measuring temperature, bearing wear, etc). If other oils don't work as well, they won't know it until their SC fails. IMHO, I'd pay a little extra to know it'll work instead of hope it'll work.

Actually one of the guys I know that's been running 10w 30 synthetic in there for a couple years takes it apart every few months to check for any signs of wear on any parts/gears and so far it's alright.
