I know nothing about doing body work so I'm hoping someone can tell me if this is fixable. If it is how much work would it take? I know that prices vary depending on place but anyone have a rough estimate of how much money based on how much time it'd take? Looking to trade my hood +cash for this one and wondering if I'd be sinking a lot of money into it.




So i picked up this hood earlier today and have ot mounted. gonna get it repaired eventually and repainted. Also have to do some more aligning on it but i had to get to work. Here's a few pics

It is fixable but I don't know how much it would cost to fix. You might be able to fix it yourself with some fiberglass resin from the parts store. But beyond that I am not sure.

I've never touched fiberglass before. How involved is it? Something I could tackle first try and have looking nice? And would there be any damage under the crack (the white part not under the hood) that I should be worried about?

Ok so after watching some youtube videos I think fiberglass is something I could do. But for someone that's already done it does this look like I'd have to someone mold the corner? Or could i get away with cutting and filling the cracks?
 


Sand down to raw glass, buy some shredded glass or shred your own, mix it with resin until it is a paste, add hardener mix again smooth it on as best you can l, make it a little higher then rest of hood (just a little) sand flush apply thin coat of red lead,sand prime paint, show before and after pics to friends pic up side jobs.
 
Go to the parts store get some metal body mesh, super cheap and some resin. Go to an auto bodyshop supply store and get some tiger hair long strand body filler. Sand the under side clean and smooth and wipe down with mineral spirits. Apply the mesh with resin so it extends at least 2 in past the damage, this is for reinforcement . Let it cure for 48 hrs then sand with a small block and 80-100 grit paper, then 150 to remove the lines . Mix a little filler about 2-3 tablespoons and apply metal spreader is best. You only need about a 1/16th of an inch. Let it dry about 30 mins . With the block and 80 or 100 lightly sand the top rough layer off then use 150 to get it down to about 1/32 then apply another layer and repeat. If you take your time you can see what you need to do to shape it.
 
Thanks guys. I'm gonna keep reading up on this but i'm not sure it's something I'd want to try right now. If it was a crack in a fender or something I'd feel confident enough but being on the hood i'm not so sure. Also the upper half of the hood is pulled away from the lower half of the hood in the front. Figure that's only going to get worse so I've gotta get this fixed before winter.

Hey. Sorry I'm late to the party, I just found this thread. If you're still running this hood...

The broken edge is fixable. Preferrably with mat and resin, its a little messed up for just a reinforced filler.

My main concern would be the apparent separation at the front. The bond between the two halves may have popped loose from the corner impact, plus age.

My advice is don't trust that hood to not fly apart. If it shakes, get it the heck off there now! You could do a cosmetic fix in the driveway cheap enough if you had some practice, but there are materials to buy and then its still iffy on staying together.

If you want an estimate on pro repair, stop by a boat fixing place or body shop but expect the price to be way beyond what the hood is probably worth. I'd want five hours to fix it, so even without paint theres $250 easy. Nobody will want to mess with it though. Liability. Maybe if you remove and install it? Looks like the general fit may leave a little to be desired anyway, but the other corners could be doctored too if you start 'glassing.
 
hmm thanks for the info it's really helpfully but also kind of disappointing haha. I'll try and get a picture of the underside up tomorrow and take it by a body shop for an estimate. Unfortunatley right now I'm stuck with it since I had to trade my stock hood. The guy though is moving out of state and might end up junking his car and said I could have my stock one back if he doesn't sell it sooner. I don't do any highway driving for work or anything though. Fastest it'll get up to is 40 and only for a few minutes.
 
Well, I try to tell it straight and play safe. Just keep an eye on it while driving and check underneath for changes once in awhile. They probably do still sell hood pins, lol. Seriously, do make sure that the thing latches with some tension (from the height adjusters) so its secure, and inspect for cracks around the hood striker mount area so if thats loose you'll know.
 
Ya i appreciate it, it's better to know. I was real careful while closing it after putting it on because it's not heavy enough to drop like a metal hood and i can't really push on the middle or anything. I did adjust the height adjusters and will check the underside mroe closely. The day i got it, it was real dirty so i ran a wet towel over it quick then had to get to work. I'll keep this updated once I get a quote. Gonna try tomorrow or thursday.
 
Alright so I went to a body shop today and they told me they wouldn't even touch it. It wasn't worth trying to fix and it was so damaged it would probably just split again later on. Called the guy i got it from and got my stock hood back from him and gave him that one back.
