Is my HUD dim?

I drove a 06 grand prix the other day and noticed that the hud was alot brighter than my 01. I know its a different HUD unit because it has temp and direction and on it . Is it possible for HUD to start dimming? I heard the windshield may be a factor if it was ever replaced with a non hud glass. Does anyone know how to tell or any ideas?

04+ HUD is quite a bit brighter then the older ones, just the way it is, unless yours is really dim it's probably the way it's supposed to be.

One way to tell if your HUD is dimming is to go over 100 MPH (not recommended on public roads) or go over 60 MPH and switch to metric (recommended on the highway). Since the 1 in your HUD speedometer doesn't get used too much, it'll be a lot brighter if the other numbers are getting dimmer, which does happen with age.

Cool, I will hit triple digits tommorow see how the 1 looks. Anyone have a idea of how to check if the glass is stock? Or has HUD? i didnt buy the car new so it may have been changed. On the lower passenger side it says made in canada, and some numbers i will recheck.

^^There are two things that usually make these HUD's dim: age (can't do anything about that), and something screwed up in the electronics. Mine's never dimmed on me with it set to maximum brightness, but if I try to dim it manually (when I first got it it was too bright at night), it will sometimes dim then work its way back up to full brightness.

Since the OP's in a 2001, I'd guess it's probably just dimmed with age.

As soon as i hit triple digits I saw the brightest #1 i ever saw on the windshield! I guess its true they dim with age.

well my 06 GP has an auto dim, it will be bright in daytime and at nite it will like vise versa and lower the site when it thinks its getting dark...

i notice sometimes mine dimms then i give er a smack and she lights back up...

This is due to a cold solder connection on the light sensor. There are several write ups about this on most boards. I've resoldered a couple HUD's to make them bright again.

Age is also a problem but if you can make it brighter, or it comes and goes on it's own you can try the solder trick.
