Is 2006 Monsoon 6-disc unit XM capable?

How would I determine this? I bought the car used, and it's obvious XM has not been activated. I asked the dealer, he said "No, Grand Prix's didn't have XM until 2008" . . . duh, what? (idiot!) Anyway - I need to determine if it is XM capable, and if it is, how do I activate? Would XM just need the VIN? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks !

about 2 weeks after i got my 06 (monsoon 6 disc) i got a deal in the mail saying they gave me a free trial for 3 months, it activated automatically but if it doesnt it'll have instructions on how to activate it.

If your car is equipped with xm already you will have U2K amongst the list of options on the sticker inside your trunk lid, all grand prix stereos 04 and up are capable of controlling a factory xm tuner.

Thanks, Michael - I sent you a private message with another question, but I figured it out. I'm now trying to decide whether to convert to sirius, (currently have it at home and on another vehicle) or trying xm with 'best of sirius' for awhile. Crutchfield has some very slick solutions for this.

Thanks again !

I think you can tell if you can have xm by the button that changes the frequencies between am and fm. If that button say AM/FM you CANNOT have XM radio. If it says BAND then it's possible to have XM. Correct me anyone if I'm wrong.

I've used both sirius and xm... its almost identical anymore, channels are on different numbers but they are the same company and you basically get all of both with either one.

when i bought my 06 Grand prix, my 6-disc monsoon came with 3 months FREE XM radio, all I had to do was call them and give them a radio ID. I carried XM for a year and then went to an aftermarket HU.

In my 04 grand prix with 6 disk changer I can flip through my band and it will go through FM1, FM2, AM, XM1, and XM2. If you have XM your car should have an antenna for it normally on top of the roof near the back windshield, it should even have the XM symol on it. To activate you can just go to xmradio.com and activate it. They will need the ID number for the XM and to get that you just go to your XM setting on the radio and I think station 1 and it will show you the ID. Not sure if it helps but thats what I had to do with my 04.
