iPod integration for a pontiac factory radio ***pics***

I'm attempting to add full iPod support to my 2003 Grand Prix gt however I've hit a speed bump.

I got an adapter (Axxess - AIP-GM02-ID) that plugs into the back of the radio (GREEN CIRCLE). I had to unplug the On Star harness (RED CIRCLE)that delivered the On Star audio to the radio. If I press one of the On Star buttons the system goes to the axillary input for however long the automated message lasts and then goes back to the radio. When it switches over, the sound quality from the ipod is excellent. Through testing with a volt meter I discovered the two wires (BLUE ARROW) that send the radio all remote controls including the buttons on the steering wheel and when On Star tells it to switch to the axillary port.

What I want to do is rig up the "PLAY" button (PURPLE CIRCLE) on the steering wheel to switch to the axillary input.

Here are pics of the On Star buttons located on the review mirror and a pic of the front of the radio for reference.

I was planning on using a slave tape player from an old 90s GM car, with the data cable between the stock unit and cassette player. Then the 3 wires for audio (l, r, ground) splice to a 1/8 jack. Looks like yours uses a similar idea. From what Ive read, hit the play button twice to access the AUX input. Also, what is the other end of that harness (circled in green) look like? Is it just a 1/8 jack?
