Intercooling

I'm looking to put an intercooler on my 05 GTP, its cheaper than headers and i dont wanna put headers on right before winter. i'm just wondering how an intercooler will affect my car from horsepower to gas mileage, what kind to get, where to get one and if it will do any harm or not to my car. right now all i have is a K&N filter and a SLP cat-back powerflow exhaust.

if you know any good sites for parts let me know. i know of zzp

There are a lot of mods you can do before an intercooler, on a stock pulley it probably won't make any "extra" power, and if there was a gain, you would need a tuner to get it.... for the $800 - $1200 for an intercooler, you could do a Tuner, MPS(modular pulley system) with 2 or 3 pulleys to switch back and forth from, and headers and be in a lot better place(power wise) than a Intercooler on a otherwise stock setup

the reason i chose the intercooler instead on the pully is cuz the intercooler wont be so bad on gas, i know the pully is great amount of horsepower for a very low price

The intercooler would be a huge amount of cash and time, It is a supporting mod for a smaller pulley, but without other mods (like the smaller pulley) you are spending lots of money to stay at the same power level..... and the smaller pulleys get the same gas mileage(if you drive the same) if not better with a good tune

You want to think of your engine as a factory of power. The more turbulant air you have coming in creates a lot of extra heat for the workers. The workers try and keep up for the boss but get confused in the rush and predetonate some mixtures(KR/predetonation). Things get hot in there and there's really no ventilation in this old factory (stock manifolds). Then all of a sudden the workers are working in a colder environment, yep the bossman put in a new A/C unit in to help them out(Intercooler). Well now the workers are finally working so smoothly and fast that the end of the assembly line, shipping, can't keep up(using stock manifolds with an IC/3.2"pulley). The workers get pissed at shipping for not keeping up and predetonate a few more mixtures (Still KR). Now things are starting to hit the fan and that new A/C unit isn't really helping the overall flow of things, Now shipping is working Overtime and they're pissed because its christmas week and they all have their babies first christmas this year They would have been a helluva lot more happier if they got their christmas bonuses this year to go out and buy some larger trucks to ship all that **** that power they are putting out now.

Ok... lol get headers, they are $400 and way cheaper and opens up your exhaust flow to be able to run an Intercooler effectively, or a pulley drop.

I just got headers on and it actually helped my gas mileage. I never hit 300 miles and above before on one tank before and I've done it 3 times now after headers. I've also been romping on the gas and checking for leaks lately so I was very surprised and impressed. No tune yet, just basic 1.0 pcm.

Intercooler is going on next, I just got some fuel rails to be able to run the full size intercooler and so far its costed me over $1000 used.

an intercooler is THE best mod you can do to your car.

good choice on picking this as your first mod.

thanks for the break down, but the intercooler i'm looking at is only 600 and my headers are 1000 with cat, i will only buy SLP. I also dont want to put on headers before winter because i dont want them to rust. the reason i dont put on a smaller pulley is cuz of gas and cuz the engine can only take so much boost, i would have to keep buying pulleys, so the pulley is gonna be one of my last mods

^^^SLP is Stainless, and coated, it should never rust.....a 3.6 or 3.5 pulley is a common change and it doesn't hurt gas mileage that bad... you probably wont even notice..... But it si your choice what you do, we are only offering advice :th_thumbsup-wink:

Are you talking about an SSIC or full sized for $600? Either way an IC is a great mod on a boosted car. I don't see how it would negatively affect gas milage, until you start throwing power adding mods at it.;)

I don't remember typing that above, it was either my drunken self or one of my buddies that night...

IC will cost more than headers by the time your done. SLP is okay but there are many other options for headers that cost less and offer different advantages. I've never seen a set of rusted headers on a grand prix before, most of them are going to outlast the car itself.

well the reason i was worried abut rust is because my brothes headers from SLP are starting to ruct, but now that i think about it, his were ceramic coarted, mine will be stainless steel, like my cat back system, the main reason i was the intersooler is because i can run a smaller pulley, i can put it on a lot easier than my headers and because it is cheaper. trust me i would love to put headers on, i want the sound, but right now money is a lil tight. my anut side swiped me... in our drive way :(

but yes i know that you are just offering suggestions and i thank you very very much for it :D

the intercooler is a water intercooler that is in between the supercharger and the intake manifold

yes it is.

youre going to want some kind of exhaust mods to go with that intercooler though so you dont develop boost stacking (no way for the boost to bleed off since you dont have any flow out of the engine). i would suggest at least a downpipe with just an intercooler.

X2, your intercooler will only do so much for you until you open the exhaust up a little more.

so right now with my car the way it is, exhaust and intake, the intercooler really wont do m any good till i get headers?

Intercooler is the best mod you can get for this cars hands down, in my opinion its the best and a damn good first mod. And i'm talking about a full sized, no SS IC. Go full sized or go home period.

For a few years on my daily driver I pulled off 3.0", Full IC, HVTB, Rockers, PEMs, 3" exh w/ 0 KR! Course my white one has a bit more done to it nowadays and its my toy now.

My other GTP (GFs DD) has a Thrasher CAI, 3.25", Full IC, 3" Catless DP, Overkilled PCM thats it and it runs damn good with 0 KR! Its got stock manis, catback, S/C, TB, heads, etc etc. Runs damn good, way better without the IC and a 3.4" which still showed a little KR here and there.
