Interchanging Cables

Hi, I'm new to this site. And I really do not know too much about cars, but I'm willing to learn as much as I can.

Right now, my car is just sitting in my driveway because my shifter cable broke. And I need my car fixed by this weekend. I couldn't find a shifter cable anywhere around here except for one place. But the problem is that it's for a '99 GP GT, not a '97.

So, my question is....Am I able to use that cable for my car, even though it's for a different year (It's not a major year difference)? I'm thinking that it would be safe to use, but I want to ask for people's opinion on this.

remove the broken one and match it up to the one that's available, as i have no idea if its the same or not.

According to my GM Catalog at work, there are several different part numbers for the cables so best bet would be to physically match up the cables. Odds are good 97 GT to a 99 GT would be the same tranny and the same cable, but that is not always the case.

I was thinking the 97 had a different tranny that the other years. I might be wrong on that though.
