Intake Q

Maybe what u could do is custom make an intake far from the engine bay with PVC...its really easy and cheap...yes cheap.....and maybe ghetto...but anyways i think its a whole lot better than that hot metal right in dead center of the engine bay by my personal opinion...

yum toxic gases lol no i think im going to see what its like with the intake on and if it does get really hot. Will rapping it in like a heat protection layer help?

Um, no. If your engine bay is getting hot enough to make PVC pipe release toxic gas and melt then you have much bigger problems to worry about. PVC is perfectly fine to use as an intake.

Depending on the manufacturer and what (if any) stabilizers were used, PVC can start to emit HCl gas (hydrogen chloride) at temperatures as low as 180-200*F. Regular operating temps for an engine bay.

i dont want poison coming from my engine. OO good story... not about intake but good story. my friend i havent talked to in a while bought a 98 grand am ok the regular base 4 banger model. he said what u ridding in now? i used to have a red box bronco 2 and he saw a car that was grayish... lol anyways he is like OOOOOOOOO that is badass!!! he saw my GTP badge i popped the hood and he was stunned lol. i was like in my head "DAMN RIGHT SON" lol he didnt know wtf a GTP was. HE DOES NOW =]. Abut the intake......... im waiting for it still for CALI but when i get it imma install it and see if i like it if not i may mod it.

I had an ebay special for about 2 years, and I did notice a nice increase in fuel mileage from the stock '97 air box. Performance was iffy, but at least I could hear the blower. I tried the ABS intake, but it just looked like poop and made the filter hard to inspect and service. Just recently, I went with the 4" modular aluminum pieces from Spectre and made my own. 2 couplers, 2 aluminum pieces and a filter = about $80 from summit. The filter is partially in the fender well and is still subject to some hot air, but it gets mostly cooler air. It'll soon get an aluminum heat shield if I ever get around to making one.

I am thinking about getting one of those cheap ones from e bay. I am going to put a ram air hood on next year before I get the car painted so theres no reason to spend big money on an intake I will end up replacing when I change the hood and I really like the louder blower whine with the cone filters. i figure it has to be at least as good as the stock one but I will get more noise from the blower.
