worried about heat soak? get holden intake manifold from a comador the TB would be pointed dirrectly infront of the car and pook out the hood.

I bet your setup doesn't do any better than a filter bolted on the end of the MAF or the TB once the car gets moving.

No, I found it on google. I was just showing Joe (Hippo) that you can turn the TB to the other side of the engine bay via a FBody intake setup.
 
its not the pipe heating up, open you hood,look at you TB and look underneath it, bam, crossover... heats up the tb.
and blue im always sitting at lights, so probably why i like my cold air intake better lol.
 


Non-Contact Infrared Laser Thermometer
I haven't used it on the car yet, but I did use it on a house heater's exhaust duct. You can see how much hotter the elbows get vs straight pipe and different locations. The temperature on the exhaust about doubled at the the bends. You can use this on our car for checking exhaust and intake temps (not the air in the piping itself). The thing I would use this on the car most for would be checking temps of the crossover pipe and the intake pipe above it. I remember a school testing a Regal's crossover pipes after a run on the track with a thermographic camera. They did stock, wrapped and ceramic coated crossover pipes. You can sorta do the same thing using a tool like this.

As for intakes, I'll probably make a filter box and then use the intake in the SD Hood on the Grand Prix. For the Regal with it's stock hood, I'll either use the metal tubing CAI I have or make up the PVC pipe intake to get the filter as close to the fender as I can like most have above.

I know this thread has been dragging along. I understand everybodies theories or facts, BUT i read somewhere else that you have to put some type of heat sensor inside the intake? Does this attain to the 04+?? I havent even looked at my intake yet since my car is....3 days old now. I would like to go with the DIY cold air system instead of the SLAP A BF filter on. What would the process be? Can i just drill a hole in whatever type of pipe i decide to use? What is the diameter of the TB so i know what size pipe to use? Thanks for all your help!
 
Heat sensor? Perhaps you're thinking about the mass airflow sensor? That would be the cylinder attached to your intake airbox, with the wires plugged into it. Keep it attached to the intake, you need it.

As for drilling, you will need to replicate the PCV tube's hole in the corrugated rubber tubing attached to the throttlebody.

Now when you say keep It attached to the filter does that mean drill a hole in the piping and install? I don't mean to sound ignorant on the subject I just don't want to screw anything up.
 
Well, if you'd just open your hood, you'll see a 3" plastic pipe at the end of the corrugated rubber, attached to your airbox. That ENTIRE tube stays. No need to drill a hole for anything.

Thank you for the pictures. It's been 8 degrees the last couple nights after work I haven't really wanted to stand out there haha. Basically If I were to put an aftermarket piping I would to keep the hard plastic at the end where it meets the filter box? And for the PCV tube at the end going into the intake duct would be the only hole I would have to make for it to fit inside after market intake duct?

Pretty sure I'm on the same page now. What is the purpose for the screen on the MAFS?? Do people remove it? Any other tips on installing aftermarket intake on the 04+?

Hot air would actually be better while sitting at a light. you dont need any power, so you can use less gas with hot air. hot air=less dense air=less gas. Probably not noticeable though.

The screen keeps the air from coming in all wild. It's not a restriction and 99% of people that remove it have problems.

Use zip ties or velcro to hold the PCM (computer) to the car. It lives inside the airbox that you will be removing.
 
I read about the Velcro. Seems to be the neatest and cleanest.
