Intake manifold gasket

I have a 1997 gp gt. I need to change the intake manifold gasket and wondering if I need the kit that comes with the pins or the kit without pins... The parts store carries both but they don't know if my vehicle requires the pins or not....Thanx Rudy:th_scratchhead:

the locating pins????

There are pegs that the gaskets line up on. Here are the gaskets installed sitting on the pegs:

IIRC, sometime in 97 GM added holes for locating pins on the end seals for the LIM. I believe on the earlier design, there was simply nothing there, so the one with the locating pins should work fine either way.

This is all assuming you're staying with plastic gaskets. AFAIK, there's only one kit (with pins) for the aluminum framed gaskets, which are what I would use.

i didnt use any alignment pins or anything like that reinstalling my lower intake and new aluminum gasket..

The pins we're talking about are molded into the gaskets that go on the ends of the lifter valley. Everything after 97 should have them, AFAIK.

I have a 97 gpthat i am about to do the lim and uim also. I hit the same snag with the pinned and unpinned version of the aluminum uim lim gaskets. I believe someone said there is only one version but i found
pinned gm # 89017816
unpinned # 89017817
aluminum versions

I have also heard peeps stating that the felpro replacement are better than the aluminum and im curious what others have used?

i ordered one pinned and one unpinned version of the gaskkets because no parts person has been able to give me a way to tell what i have before before i open it up. I'm doing this repair off of sabrewings article on the repair which is very clear so thanks for that.

Sabrewings out there? You had such good info on this repair i have a couple questions but dont see a way to p.m. ya.

Thanksall

If you click on a person's name it gives the option to PM.

Anyway, I'm not so sure about this pinned/unpinned stuff. Nor have I seen the FelPro version of the gaskets. I know the aluminum gaskets from GM are great since that's what I used along with an updated design of the UIM gasket. Both the LIM gaskets and UIM gasket were new from GM in the bag. All I had to do was hold the GM aluminum gaskets and I knew they'd work just fine. Thick and sturdy.

Disclaimer, based off what others have said your 97 will be slightly different in the alternator bracket area than mine. I haven't personally opened up a 97 3800, but plenty here have and if I can't answer your question or it isn't obvious, this is a good place to get help.

Aside from that, I'm open to questions in PM if you still need some answers. I am currently out of town and won't be back for a few days. Managed to get some dial up here... >.<
