ignition problems or worn keys?

I have a 2001 and the ignition is acting a little weird. It starts and shuts off OK but I can pull the key out when it running and sometimes have problems getting the ignition switch to the right position when shutting it off (the cars acts like the key is still in - alarms go off when door is opened, etc.)

I bought this car used and the keys were really worn down - had trouble getting doors unlocked. I got a key code from a dealer and had a non-chipped key made to open the doors and trunk and that seemed to work there.

Could it be the keys are worn or is the ignition wearing out as well? I am thinking about getting a new chipped-key made.

Any help would be appreciated
 


my car does the same thing, the key will come out with no effort at all. i did get myself a new key that is tighter but also will come out.

so im thinking its the lock tumbler. what i do is when i shut my car off to park it. i make sure the ignition is locked after the key is out. or you can have a dead battery in the morning.

if the key does come out while driving, ( even a little bit) my security light comes on, but the car still runs fine for me.
 
Our car is doing the same thing. Also can pull shifter out of park while car is off and key removed. This leaves power on and drains the battery down. I replaced the electrical part of the ignition switch and it did nothing to solve this issue. I have ordered and received yesterday but have not installed as of yet the new tumbler and keys. I have the instructions from a GM Master Mechanic the proceedure on how to relearn the car to your new keys if you decide to do the same thing. A new tumbler and key set is like $24.50 tax and shipping from Rockauto. I plan to install this week and will report back the results on my Continuous battery draining thread I started a week or so back. Be happy to give you the results on here as well. If you decide to change tumbler and keys let me know if you need the instructions on how to relearn the keys to the computer and I will PM them to you.
