ignition lock cylinder inquiry

Hello all,

My niece lost the key to her 2004 grand prix and I have searched high and low for a replacemnt lock cylinder w/keys
and haven't found any.
Does anyone know if another year grand prix (or similar gm vehicle) will work as a replacement?
Thanks in advance.

call any gm dealer with your vin #. they can tell you what key you need to buy for the car, or buy it from them.

i got mine off ebay, if you have a vat key (security key) you need to know the ohms of the key so you buy the right one. the dealer should be able to tell you.

scratch most of that, you need to get it from the dealer, you have no key to have the new one cut from. dealer time sir.

Was prepared for that response.
Is it possible to get one from a 2004 salvage yard with a key and take it through the relearning procedure and that will work?

im not 100% sure, but there should be the ignition switch and a sensor that is matched to the key, you need both parts i think, its all in the column. and just swapping them should work with no reprogramming.

again im not 100 % sure, but a new key cut from the dealer shouldn't cost more than 50 bucks i would think. no idea what they cost at a yard, plus the labor to get to it,( 2 times) it maybe worth a shot calling to see how much the dealer charges for a new key.

its one of them "its done and over with" deals to me.

and they can tell you if there are any recalls not done on your car yet.

Ok gonna need your help again.
I got a cylinder from a salvage yard ($30 u-pull it). I installed it, turned the key lights come on on the dash but the car doesn't start.
Did I miss something?
Sounds like that starter doesn't even engage.
No crank, nothing.

You may have luck with the key relearn procedure. It's around here somewhere. What it does is let the pcm learn the key code. Although being an 04...I can't remember if that's a dealer program or if you can learn it.

Ya, your best is to try and program the key to the computer and see if that works before you try anything else. The key has gotta be programmed to work so sounds like that could be the problem

UPDATE!!!I installed my replacement lock cylinder and went through the reprogramming process. (might have done it wrong). Didn't work.Swapped the circuitry in both cylinders and tried again. Key would engage starter but still didn't fully start the car (security message:starter disable due to theft something, then later see a message "key not programmed" illuminate).Ok. I turn the key to try to start the car 2 times then leave it in the on position for 10 minutes. Turn the key to off for 10 seconds and try to start and nothing.I read briefly about a 30 minute procedure. Is it that I try this 2 more times in a 30 minute period??Almost there!!!!Help.

so your learning the key to the car now? did you replace the whole cylinder or just the tumbler? there is a ring that is paired to the key. relearn should fix it up though

The ring paired to the key is the one that wasn't working when I tried to relearn the first time.
I swapped that one with the original ring and when I went through the relearn, the car at least made an attempt to start.

thats progress for sure, i do believe there is diffent relaerns for the keys though. have you got her running?

Have to throw some gas in her and check again this weekend. But hopefully it'll start and run and stay running.
Just trying to get as many tips as I can as I don't have access to a computer on the weekend.

i have to go get three keys cut and two programmed and two fob for a total of 266$ is what i was told. uhm i think im gonna do one at a time or find a tech 2 for cheap....cough cough

you can get all of that from e bay for about 100 bucks.

set of 2 fobs 50 bucks new,

keys are roughly 10 -15 bucks each on e bay also.

the way i shop, i just saved you almost 200 dollars, stop going to the dealer unless you have a warranty, its for your own good. trust me.

and then find a good used or reasonably priced tech 2, e bay also.....
