Ideal timing

So im sitting at 20 WOT now on a 3.6. I went up from a 3.4 pulley do to high track times (14.0@99 mph 2.1 60ft) so I figured id give this a shot. Where would you stop at? 21 wot?

Tuning Your Timing Tables - OpenTuner Notebook

someone will say 16* and the smallest pulley you can get away with. Most torque that way.

Someone will say 18* and the smallest pulley you can get away with. Better balance of torque, horsepower, and SAFETY in the case of knock.

And the link i sent you says 20-21. Most power, smallest safety net.

How agressive do you want your tune to be?

heres what i say:

- if youre gonna beat on your car a lot, run 16* WOT
- if youre gonna beat on it, but scan it a lot and pay attention, run 18* WOT
- if youre gonna scan a lot and always pay attention, run 20* WOT

this way you can romp on it a lot and not care because your running lower timing.

Just some friendly advice for what it is worth. You might be going the wrong way for maximum power. I'm saying might, not that you are. Advancing timing until KR, then backing off isn't good tuning IMHO. If in fact that is what you had planned. Also more timing doesn’t always mean more power. You could street/track tune if you are a good consistent driver and just use tracks times as the HP indicator. But really you should consider some dyno time. Not to bash any particular boxed tunes out there, but one establishment loves pushing the timing edge until one day you get on it (usually in the fall/winter) and bang I nice hole in your piston.:th_nervous:

PS Matt's link is nice :th_peaceout:

Well having 5 full years of tuning these cars Im pretty kean to what works and what doesnt. I was with the small pulley crowd 16 wot timing for the longest time but I can tell you that the track times people including myself are getting Blow. Im changing up the tune and rolling with high timming low Boost and seeing what happens. More timing almost always means more power. Unless your talking very High timing which will eventually have deminishing returns. Ill report back to my track times. 16 degrees in my car with a higher compression engine build BLOWS. Its a turd....SOrry im sick of running 14's in a intercooled headered set up lol

i always liked running stock timing and small pulleys. bigger boost numbers and more whine. i didnt really car if the car was faster on a bigger pulley with more timing.

im running 28 at wot lol but im waiting for winter to get injectors as im rebuilding the motor.....on another note..we should try and go above 12 psi boost? im at 10.5 now with a 3.2 pulley and about to remove the intercooler so i guess im about maxed

if i lower it my butt dino gets sad so im assuming its doing something..any yes i can run 28 as i am....i squack tire leaving first at 48 mph (i know its set wrong but i like it and dont mind buying trannies) and i can get a car length away from a new gt mustang before i hit 40 so im good with 28 till rebuild time...did i mention my tranny started slipping today lol oh trannyman i need u...lol

There is a lot of fail in this thread, but more timing always prevails over trying a smaller pulley. The m90 cars always like to be run leaner and more timing rather than boost.

Your experience is lacking.

Because I don't have an m90 car other than the couple I have tuned, here is a good one below:

The car runs 26* of timing tops with a timing curve that goes up with the rpm's. It's the highest trapping, fastest non sponsored m90 only car. He also runs it leaner than **** on race gas.

I don't really have time to be on this forum anymore, so i'll discuss some other time.

I've also put a regal into the 12.7x range with a 3.3 pulley non-ic with little tuning and he wanted me running it in the 10.8-11.2 afr range.

I agree Fosh, And seeing shawns car and a few others is what had me going from lower pulleys to higher pulleys with higher timing. My times are CHit compared to what they should be. I can tell you that as ive went up in pulleys and made less of a spark curve and kept the timming pretty consistent its pulled much better. Im hoping to hit the track tomorrow or sunday and seeing positve results. Im not going balls to the wall as Im looking for relibility as well.

I said his advice sucks because he didn't offer anything other than our advice sucks.

If my advice sucks, I wanna know why, because learning is good.

Oh i see what happened here.... The bastard edited it AFTER I POSTED!@#

So now i look like an ass.

Thanks guys for reading the times on these things...

When I posted this is all that was there: There is a lot of fail in this thread

Or something to that effect.

Fosho... I shake my fist at you.... :D

Like i said, i dont have much time with everything else goin on. I go to work, get home and go to work on the farm. I have just about enough time to see a few posts and then leave. Also, the laptop im on hates this forum, i type a message, then it just sits and acts like its loading. If i post right away, it lets me edit all I want, so you may see some of my posts with some bs in them, im usually editing them so i can actually post... lol

To the OP, what mods do you have on your car? Can't really suggest anything without knowing what you have done to it so far. All i can tell is from your avatar it looks like your running an intercooler or a shiny rad? But if you say your running a 3.4-6ish pulley, i doubt you have an intercooler? I would just have a couple of different tunes and play with it at the track.
