A Shout Box....ask anyone thats visited the DHP board...the shout box is one of the most popular features and we about got skinned alive when we removed it (for a short time and we do have a user selectable skin without it)... so what you think guys

Sorry Synthetic if the software doesn't support it feel free to delete this pole.


Jeez, I just joined and am creating HAVOC in here...first the "Ban Thread" now this...what ever will I think of next...HMMMMM....free beer....no too much logistics involved...oh well I will keep thinking ROFLMAO

it surprises me there are not more sites with them...I think they make a cool sort of in house Instant messenger...I know ClubGP doesn't have one because there software BLOWS and well so does the forum anymore.
 
should I post a screen shot of what the DHP board looks like with the chat box?...would that help some people get the idea?
 


We (the Admins) have discussed this very issue. The problem is not with having a chat, or shoutbox or any of that really. Its the information that would be lost. Someone comes into the chat and says I have x problem and someone else steps up and says I know exactly what will fix that, do this, this and that.

Well now that information is lost to the forums and is not searchable. That more than anything is the major draw back as we envisioned this community having a large technical base with lots of relevant and current information that could be found by anyone. Obviously we dont want purely a technical forum, we want a place as well where people can talk, have fun and be part of something bigger and grow the excitement for the cars we drive.

The other issue is being able to police/moderate a shout box or chat. Thats another challenge all in itself.

So its not that we dont want one, its overcoming the oversight and the potential loss of information that would go towards making this community an even better place.
 
hmm..DHP board shout box does save all the shouts...have never tried searching it...I know you can click on it and open a shout page with all the previous shouts back to XXX days (whatever the software is setup to save, all, 30 days etc.)...I do see your point on lost info though...and as far as policing we have a warn meter system to use if people get out of hand....as far as deleting shouts...probably can just never had too...no one to my knowledge has gotten into an argument on it...but I am sure it could happen.

well maybe something can be figured out...like I said feel free to delete lock post if you like...it won't offend me.
 
Im not deleting the post, its stuff like this that allows us to bounce ideas around and perhaps get new input and new ideas that would help make things work. I follow these things just in case there is something out there that would help. Id like to see a chat here but I also want to deal with the concerns.

Synthetic...I double checked our chat box...it has every chat ever made back to when we had to use a backup of our database cause the server it was hosted on crashed. as far as searching it...only way I saw was by individual poster. members are able to delete there own posts, but I cant even delete others posts in it...I have manager level access not root admin access they might be able to delete indavidual posts, but not sure. I know you can add settings too it, but not sure if you can add a custom search setting or moderation setting (thats above my skill level when it gets into HTML and IPB code, etc...I have a skin I play with thats hidden to try to teach myself what each thing does but I am by no means even a decent beginner at it....more like a bull in a china shop with his finger on nuclear Holocaust button. ROFLMAO)

Eh, I didn't vote because I could really care less either way. I don't come on here to hang out. If there was a chat or shout box, I might step in from time to time. But I don't feel bad because we don't have one here. So I am on the fence.
 
id like the chat if we can get it going. id be on it at all times.

We can hope that if a problem arises that people discuss, that they would post it on the forum as well for people to search.
 


I was afraid of that, but thats okay too. I mean I havent given up on the idea, I just want to make sure all the concerns are addressed as best as possible. It may yet happen but it may take a while too.
