HV3 High Velocity Intake Insert

I was planing on buying HV3 High Velocity Intake Insert and called my shop to ask, how much to have it installed. I know it easy, but I am a noob. However the shop told me it is not worth the $200, because it dose not really give you 20-30HP. He said you would had to tune your car's computer for it to be effective. is this true?

In a way because the HV3 makes it power up top.

I'd couple an HV3 with headers and a tune to get the full potential. People still see gains up top with it where these cars lack...and it seriously is an easy job...no gaskets really needed at all.

How dose a noob like myself, tune a car for something like that or do I have a shop do it?

I'm not well versed on this particular product, but with plenum changes like this, you are getting a trade off. You should gain a few HP, but will move the butter zone of performance from the mid RPM range, to the top RPM range. The trade off is that you gain more HP on wide open runs, but you will lose some during more modest acceleration. For example, I wouldn't want to do this myself because I do a reasonable amount of city driving and prefer the power in the mid range.

But all that said, 10 HP is a small enough change that you might not even notice the low to mid range power dip. And if you like that kick in the pants at WOT, it's an easy way to get more.

As for installing it, look up videos on top swap, or UIM gasket repairs. They will show you how to disassemble the upper intake. It's not hard, just take your time and be careful.

You can buy an off the shelf PCM for a GT...or PM Reptile for a tune...depending on the year of your car, we can give you the tune from my GT...it ran like a raped ape for a bolt-ons N/A car. Click the link in my signature as well for more info, but removing the UIM and inserting the HV3 takes literally a half an hour tops even if you don't know what you're doing...its that easy.

Thanks guys..so based on what you guys are saying, I still should get the HV3 High Velocity Intake Insert and then tune the car myself right? I try it if you guys are willing to help and I will look up videos for the install as well.

P.S. I do allot city driving, is it still worth it?

No, if you aren't comfortable installing the HV3, I wouldn't pick up tuning PCM's just yet.

You can however buy a pre-tuned PCM for your car from a vendor...like I said, click the link in my thread and read...you'll get quite a bit of info from it. Seems like you gotta do some reading anyways new guy ;)

I'd recommend at LEAST a downpipe or a u-bend delete when you do the HV3 though, as it needs to help flowinininin.

That is where I got the idea for the intake. Can the U-Bend delete be done by a noob? what is a downpipe (such a noob :( )? Would this do the trick http://www.3800performance.com/Merc...e=PCM_GT_V1&Category_Code=PCM&Product_Count=2? and do I need the upper intake inset as well? It is $60 more.

Thanks reading it right now!

This is Chinese to me :(

yes that PCM would work for ya. The downpipe is the section of the exhaust that connects the rear manifold to the catback. If you purchase a downpipe it will eliminate the u bend.

Thanks! What order should should I get everything? I can't afford all the parts at once. Should I buy the PCM first, so when I install the rest of the mods in my car, my car will take advantages of the mods right away? do I need the upper intake inset as well? It is $60 extra.

Update: called a shop then they had me call a
performance car shop, which had me call the dealer because, the crank sensor position (or CASE) needs to be learned after install of the PCM. Dealer wants $200 for PCM install + CASE learned. I'm going to do this when I get my tax return....cant wait! The PCM going cost me $225 ($100 deposit on new core) then I get $100 of it back when I send them my old core. At the end of the day it going cost me $325, which not bad, I plan on spending more then I spent on this car making this baby purr :D. If I get everything done to this car that I want to, it should be faster then a stock GTP hopefully :D After PCM installed, I want to install the HV3 air intakes inserts and install a down pipe. I also would like to do that mod where you have the air filter exposed. Do not know what to mod next... I am looking for acceleration over speed and saving gas. If I wanted to save gas I would bought a v4 ;)

Save yourself $200 and install the PCM yourself. It isn't that hard to do. Then you can get a case learn.

$200 is mostley for the CASE learn,so got to go to the dealer, might as well get the PCM installed at the same time. According to http://www.grandprix.net, "IMPORTANT: If you are installing a reprogrammed PCM, make sure to take the car to the dealer to get the crank sensor position (or CASE) learned. This is not required for 1997 GP PCMs because the data is already stored in the knock sensor you switched above. You may get a "Service Engine Soon" lamp after the installation - this is due to the CASE learn not having been performed. Whether you get the SES light or not, you should still get the CASE learn procedure performed. Any GM dealer or official service shop can do the procedure if they have a Tech2; they may charge you a nominal fee for the service. In brief, here is a description from the GM
Service Manual:"

You shouldn't install a HV3 without ER rockers or a cam. The stock valvetrain doesn't flow enough to make use of it.

Just make an intake( http://www.grandprixforums.net/simple-intake-pictures-33351.html ), get a 2.5" down pipe, and a tuned PCM and call it a day. If you want to make any more power a gtp would be cheaper.

by the sounds of things yea lol. However, I could always buy part by part over time. Not cheaper but more affordable that way for me. :/ I check out the link.

Wow that is easy, I am going to do that for sure! Will that mod work if I do it before I get the PCM? and how big of a whole is that, for the air flow sensor?

Yes it will (and sound awesome) however, I'd suggest doing just those 3 simple mods at the same time along with any maintanince that your car needs.
