HV3- 2000 L36 series II

Article is pretty accurate. The HV3 works well and is worth the time. Will work even better with some other intake and exhaust mods.
It's worth your time to clean the carbon build up from the throttle body and upper intake.
You should DEFINITELY remove your fuel rail and replace the O rings and clean up the injector tips. I was very surprised at how brittle the rubber rings were. Most of them broke when I rolled the lower ones off the injector.
Just good maintenance that's all.

are any supporting mods 100% necessary to have an HV3 (i.e. dp, headers, etc?)?
or is it cool to just have the HV3 for the time being?

yea i just want to be sure. whenever i get the money maybe sometime next year after doing my struts and PS pump, i would like to just get a new plenum and HV3. i'm scared to guess how long the plenum may hold up. and after spinning a bearing in my old 3800 i do NOT want a drop of antifreeze in my engine anywhere.

You technically don't NEED supporting mods for it but look at it this way...

An Intake and another mod that helps the intake system better itself...but a totally stock exhaust system...so you have all this air but it can't escape fast enough...I'd wait and install it after you at least get some sort of downpipe on that car...or go and have the U-Bend taken out at the minimum.

Also...moved to the N/A section.

Would it be bad to install it without upgrading the exhaust?
I was planning on having the u-bend taken out anyway but I don't have the money to do both at once
If I install the HV3 and have the stock exhaust setup during this winter and in spring get the u-bend taken out would that be alright?
This car is a DD but the daily commute is less than 35 minutes round trip if that matters

Getting the U-Bend done is like 30 bucks man...if you get charged more than $50 your getting hosed. Don't put the HV3 in until you get the U-Bend removed...it is the most restrictive part of these cars PERIOD. Should be the first mod on every '97-'03 car. I'd bet you'd actually get knock in that car with all those intake mods and the weather being this cold out.

I don't mean to be mean...

But it doesn't have bolts on either side...therefore...it's not BOLT-IN. You don't need that crap...just have a universal bung welded in and the u-bend cut out and a straight piece of pipe welded in its place.

Done.

It's been said over and over again and kinda proven, putting headers on a N/A grand prix gt will give a loss of low end torque but top end power is strong.Putting headers on a boosted car (gtp) will not cause a loss in low end in fact it gives more torque and Hp.More air into blower=more power.A downpipe and plog will retain low end torque(maybe even add little) and also improve top end in a N\A grand prix gt.Same on a gtp.Now the flow will not be as good as headers but youll still get some power. There!

Those headers would be just fine.

have you driven a n/a car with headers?

no but I could imagine how crappy the low end would be. I did drive one with a dp and it felt even slower. Like I said Id go DP and plog on a GT but not headers. GT N/a isnt gonna push enough air to warrant bigger primary's then what the stock rear and Plog offer IMO....If he had a S3 cam and heads, was reving to 7K rpms then maybe they would compliment the setup.

So you've never driven it but you can just imagine it.

Well I can tell you its quite fun.

Instead of pulling like mad between 3000 and 4000 it pulls evenly up to about 5500.

This means moving the power band up which means its prolly gonna be faster...

Torque is what makes a car FEEL fast but it doesnt mean it IS fast.

Like I said if you COMBINED headers with valvetrain mods to get more Rpms Id agree, But when the cars shifting at 6K rpms....not so much. Some of the fastest GP's are on plog/Ported set ups(turbo set ups). Id think the power band on the GT with a Plog is more usable then one with headers.

Reason I'm going with 01 on this Matt...and here it is.

You are right, headers are a better upgrade for ANY car IMO, but when your throwing them on a car that doesn't have a high RPM powerband even with mods...and your moving the powerband HIGHER, it doesn't make sense. Utilize the powerband where the car is strongest and capitalize on that...the PLOG/DP setup retains that factory low-end while letting it breathe efficiently.

I do think however...headers would be a great mod if he plans on top swapping OR camming it. I honestly don't think HEADS are a necessary mod...but they would be nice to go with headers.

In the long run, L26/36 powered cars just don't make the power where the headers make it.
