So the down button on my hud switch doesn't work, not sure how to take it out and fix it! I would love to use it!

Take out the 2 bolts on each side of the console.

Put the gear selector into 2nd, then remove the screw from the shift knob, and take off the shift knob.

Pull up on the console from the back to disengage it from the hold downs. Then ull it rearward slightly until you see the electrical connector at the front of the console/under the IP.

Disconnect the wiring harness at the front of the console/under the IP.

Remove the console from the vehicle.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the HUD switch.

Remove the HUD switch from the back of the console.

Installation is reverse order.

Not sure about how to open the switch and fix it, but a new switch is about $20, so just replace it.

My friend had a similar problem. Turned the spring in the HUD itself detached and had to drill another hole to hook it back up.

Are you working on a 97-03 Grand Prix? If so, the HUD switch is on dash not console. Carefully grip and pull out the instrument panel bezel (like you're gonna put a radio in, that big trim piece). It just pulls off and snaps back in. Nothing is connected to it except the fog lamp wires. Unplug those and remove, or just work around the loosened bezel to remove two screws that hold the HUD switch to the dash. Try that.

I'm not sure about fixing the switch, but I have a couple laying around that aren't being used if you need one.
Also, like someone else said, it could be the return spring inside the HUD that broke.

No I have a 04 gtp with paddle shifters that's why it only has PRNDM down the counsel.

That would be good to know up front. But I wondered about only having M. Could have been a Ford for all I knew.

Thanks! So how do I get this one out by chance?

One of the 04+ guys will have to step up, I reckon. I know squat about those. Sounded like that other poster had taken one out before though. Maybe switch caps lock on and START SHOUTING. Just kidding... I hope somebody knows. I hope its not the HUD unit itself causing the problem, but they ARE known to have weakness in the parts that move. Funny how if I set it in the morning on mine, I have to move it in the afternoon because too tired to sit up straight. If it wasn't so, I'd say put it in one spot and forget it.

If you can see the HUD on the windshield when you put your head towards your knees ,looking up at the display area through the steering wheel, it is the spring that broke.
You didn't mention anything about that.

Since the favorite DIY link doesn't work from Altipweb, you can field some questions after you ponder(I like that word) this link from GPONA

http://www.gpona.com/forums/hud-repair-write-up-2004-grand-prix-gtp-comp-g-t6766.html

Instead of gluing the washer just drill a hole sized for the spring. Once it's in front of you, seeing where the new hole should go, will be apparent.
