HUD showing incorrect speed & no cruise control

I have a 98 GTP. My cruise control stopped working the same time (well I noticed it at the same time) as the HUD started to show the wrong speed. When I am going 55 MPH the HUD indicates around 85 MPH.
Does anyone onw know if the HUD is a separate piece or is is an integral part of the computer?
Has anyone else experienced this and if so how did you fix it? I am pretty handy and would like to be able to perform the repairs myself.
