HUD screen replacement w/screen guard?

I just fixed my 04 HUD, but while removing the upper trim panel pieces were braking apart like tooth picks. The plastic film on the hud was broke. I tried clear packaging tape. It will do, but I do not like it. I was wondering if anyone has tried to cut out the plastic screen and replace it with screen protector for say a 7" tablet and cut to size ? Is the plastic screen special in any kind of way? :th_scratchhead:

Hi Ed,

First of all, what was wrong with your HUD? I have heard of a Spring coming detached, so that it didn't project in the correct spot. Mine stopped working one day...ABOUT A YEAR AGO...I miss it! Some door trim removal tool being used "may" have saved you the shreading of the plastic bezel and Escution...but just a thought. I haven't seen anything that showed me how to disassemble the dash correctly...so I haven't tried.\

The spring inside be HUD had pulled through the plastic hole in side of the unit. It was very easy to open up drilling new hole and put it back together. But, I live in Florida and it gets pretty hot here. Not to mention the plastic that Pontiac uses is so cheap that it breaks with little exertion of force. it was actually pretty easy to fix the heads up display. Most of the trim panels are held in by clips. The only problem is that they break very easy when pulling up so you must take great care. I was able to order the panels from GM at a cost of $158. Now the screen is another issue. I have temporarily put Saran wrap to keep dust out where the screen used to be and I am going to a window shop to see if they can cut a piece of glass or plexiglass to fit. I am just concerned about the glass not being beveled like the plastic that was there before.
