HUD... Pain in the A$$...

Two weeks ago when I bought my 2001 GP there was a JVC HU that was installed by the previous owner and it didn't work properly so I replaced it with a factory HU out of a totalled 2001 GP. The HU works great, the steering wheel controls work too, but the HUD is not working. When the HUD button is pressed I can hear the unit moving but nothing is displayed, I've have adjusted the DIM too. I also see nothing when looking at the HUD throught the Windshield. Any idea or suggestions?

Look at the HUD through the windshield. There is a little spring that is probably broken. You will see it laying down. It's a pain in the @$$ to repair. There is a very good how to write up on here somewhere. It's nothing electrical. Just poor design! Hopefully this helps you out.

Thanks Robroy, I found the write up on the Spring in the HUD. Now just to tackle the job when I have a few hours. :th_laugh-lol2:

I did it, and broke the front plastic dash piece. I found a new one online for forty bucks though. Good luck. It is not too bad of a job to do. I remember checking everything electrical that could have possibly been related to the nonexistent HUD display. Then I found the how to. Peace

I have the same problem, when i look down thru the windshield nothing is lit up. I have only had the car for a week and it hasnt worked at all. Today while trying to figure out the problem i found a small black module looking thing with fins that was unplugged. I plugged it in and the hud came on........for about 2 minutes then went out again. I checked the connection at what i thought was the hud module and later found out it is the drl diode. Connection was good but the diode was very hot, so i took it out to inspect and re-installed once it cooled down.......hud works again, for about 2 minutes. Is the drl diode in anyway connected to the hud?????

this is a pic of the spring that was broken on my HUD, i just re drilled a new hole in the plastic near where it broke off of. i can't answer your question about the drl diode, but i'm sure somebody on here can.

I dont think so except for the dimming function but theres a reason it has that much heat sinking.

Well it must have just been coincidence that the drl diode had anything to do with it. I went to work yesterday with the diode off the car and the hud worked for a few minutes and then disappeared. Is that a normal occurence for this spring issue?

yes, poor design IMO. just look in at the HUD through the windshield, you'll see if it's broken. i think once it is broken, you don't see the display until you fix it? that is odd that it stays on, then goes away. what year is your car? bad dimmer maybe?

Its a 2001 gtp, I have wondered about the dimmer. Last time it came on i played with the dimmer and it was working but that is still a possibility i guess. Is there anyway to check it?

Well today I tore apart the dash looking for that spring but had no luck. I didnt even find a spring at all, and no brackets that look like they should have a spring. However when i put it all back together the hud worked again, for a few minutes then started flickering and went out. So i started shaking the hud assy and it came back for a minute then same thing. Any ideas?

look at the pic i posted above, you will the the spring on the left of the picture. that is where it should be. if it is broken, it will be laying down on the bottom. if you look at the pic, you can kind of see how the mechanism works. it is on a roller, that pivots that reflecting mirror up and down, to adjust the height of the HUD in your windshield. if the spring comes loose, then the display is either going to be too high, or too low for you to see. with that being said, i don't think it sounds like your spring is broken, due to it staying on, then going off?! checking the spring to see if it is still hooked up, is just one of the troubleshooting steps. check all fuses, inside the car, and the motor compartment. i'll try to do some research on the dimmer for you tonite, after i get a little intoxicated!

I definately have no spring there, i seen the roller where it adjusts the level of view though. But its funny cuz there was no spring anywhere in there and i completely disassembled the module. i didnt even see a broken tab or anything, it sounds like i am going to have to find a new assy or atlerast a used one. But i appreciate anything you can come up with.

i have an 04 gtp, and i'm not sure if the setup is different or not, maybe you could have somebody make the display go up and down, and you look down at it through the windshield to see if your mirror is moving at all.

yeah the mirror moves, i checked it while the hud was on. the display will go all the way up out of sight and down below line of sight with the switch. Today i noticed that whenever the display starts going dim i can tap the side of it and it will come back on full strength.

With a closer examination of the HUD I found that it is indeed moving up and down, as it should, but when I move the dimmer switch inside the car the eye turns off and on like it may have a short. I'm at a lose!!!
