HUD becomes very bright and then goes back to normal

My heads up display will sometimes become very bright, so bright that when i turn it to the lowest brightness its as bright as it is when its normally at its highest brightness. and when this happens, the highest setting is ridiculously bright. it will go between this and how it is normally several times when I'm driving. it'll change every 5 minutes or so give or take a few minutes. any ideas why its doing this?
 


Mine was doing this, going from very bright to very dim all by itself. I found a "how-to" posted here that shows how to remove the HUD and all I did was reheat the solder on both contact points for the photocell. Its been working perfectly for 3-4 months now.

alright thanks! thats great to know that the photocell is the problem. ive taken the HUD out before because the spring for adjusting the height had popped loose so i can get it apart no problem.
