How will no VSS affect trans?

Long story short, intermittent issues with Vehicle Speed Sensor. When 98 GTP gets hot and in traffic, speedo starts to dance and eventually dies. Occasionally when this happened, car stalled. The stalling seems to be corrected with a new coil pack, which was replaced chasing a misfire. Throws a P0502 'VSS Circuit Low Input" code. Swapped known good VSS from my 97 GTP and now have no speedo at all. So, I suspect it is a wiring issue. Any tips to confirm that? Also, what is the likely hood of damaging trans with no speed input to computer? The trans shifts, albeit slightly rough especially 3-4.
