How tuff is it to replace the 4th gear clutch hub?

1998 GTP. I have the tranny out already, it had lost 4th gear and I replaced it with a used 2000 gtp tranny. Now the 2000's tranny is slipping in 1st like once a week. So I'm thinking I should just replace the clutch hub and pop that tranny back in. It always shifted great otherwise.

So my question is "How tuff is it to replace that hub? Is there any literature on the web I could read on how to do it?"

It's cake.

Pull the side cover gently (seal is reusable)
Gently disconnect the electrical harness and remove it from the case
Remove all the bolts on the channel plate lowest bolts you can see on the side where you opened it.
Now remove the highest bolts (pump)
There are 2-3 others that I can try to get a picture of tonight for you that need to come off. By not removing them all, you can leave the valve body and channel plate together. This keeps you from worrying about the checkballs and gaskets for those pieces. You only need the two channel plate gaskets.

Then the hub is right on top. Lift your 4th clutches out and you have the hub in yoru hand. I have pics..but also a meeting in 1 minutes. Gotta jet.

Not to hijack but a quick question...

Is this the fix for not going into 4th? My 00 gtp runs, shifts great except that a couple weeks ago, no more overdrive.

Hi, Are you able to get some pictures to show which bolts need to be removed to get access? I have the tranny on the bench and I just need to replace the 4th gear hub... but if I can do it without having to open the valve body would be great.

thanks
Rob

Does anyone have a picture to show which bolts I have to remove without opening the valve body to replace the 4th gear hub?

Thanks,
Rob

cake my ass. I would HIGHLY recommend taking to a shop and having them do it for you. You have to remove the valve body, channel plate, and a small portion of the clutch assembly. Not something i'd have a novice do. This isn't a brake job here..

Thanks for the recommendation but I would rather attemp this myself. I am the type which will research something, attempt it, if I fail, try again. This is how I learn.

Thanks again,

though, I do plan to opening it all, but if billboost 37 can post a picture of which bolts I only require to remove?? This can save some time and maybe some headaches....

But, if I can't get a picture showing, I will just go ahead and do it from the other threads on the interwebz regarding this.

I'm all for hands on, hell i've done countless motor/trans swaps just from learning as I go. automatic transmission isn't something i'd recommend doing unless you have a manual and some idea of what you're getting yourself into

Thanks to this thread, and a couple others, I was able to replace the 4th clutch hub on our 99 GP.:D Took about 16hrs total over 3 days from pulling into garage to test drive, including pulling the pan and installing a shift kit. Did it without removing the trans by dropping the cradle on drivers side. For others considering it, research this site for tips and pics, that helped a lot.

Thanks again!

I would get an ATSG manual before going into it and for around 25 bucks, it would pay for itself.
