i have a 98 grand prix gtp that needs to have the torque converter replaced. what tools do i need to do this. Also a how to guide with detailed steps would be awsome, since this is my first big project. What size Socket do i need for the Axle Nuts? how does the axle spindles discconect from the tranny? also how do i unbolt the steering gear from the cradle. Thanks!

Flat head screw driver
Philllips screwdriver
13mm wrench
18mm wrench
8mm socket (all sockets deep unless stated)
10mm socket
13mm socket
15mm socket
18mm deep and shallow sockets
34/36mm sockets
24-48" of extensions
Needle nose pliers
3-4 foot 4x4 and 4 feet of chain or engine holder with accessories
push pin clip popper always good to have.
Jackstands and jack

Disconnect negative battery cable
Pop shifter cable off of selector arm
Unplug 2 connectors at trans range position switch (97-99ish)
Remove 2 13mm bolts holding shifter cable bracket to trans (keep cable in bracket)
Remove 15mm nut on from lower trans to engine bolt location to remove negative cable from that stud.
Support engine with fixture or 4x4 and chain (Make sure this is well done and it's taunt, your life will rely on it)
Jack the car pretty high and support from drip edge (factory jacking location in front along door sill)

Drain trans fluid (10mm)

Remove both front tires (19mm)

Remove splash shields that keep you from seeing trans/engine (phillips/pop clips)

Remove cotter pins from ball joints
Remove ball joint castle nuts (18mm)
IMG_2777.jpg

Remove the two bolts (18mm both sides) that hold the ps rack to the subframe
Remove both sway bar end links (stock 13mm)
Disconnect ABS sensors from wiring
Remove 10mm bolt that holds brake line bracket to body in wheel well

IMG_2772.jpg

Remove both axle nuts (stock 36mm, aftermarket typically 34mm)
IMG_2764.jpg

Leaving axle nut on end of spline hit (to not mess up threads) the axle inward until it's freed from the hub and moving
IMG_2765.jpg

Using a long prybar have an assistant pry down on the lower control arm while you hit the balljoint to free it from the knuckle
Remove both axles from hubs
Remove axles from trans
Remove any clips holding ps lines, wires, abs sensor wiring etc to subframe
Remove 4 18mm bolts holding subframe to body, slide out of way
Remove starter plastic shroud (POS in way of bolts (10mm)
Remove starter (2 15mm bolts, then wiring held on by 8mm and 13mm)
Remove plastic flywheel shield (10mm)
Remove 3 flex to torque converter bolts (18mm) you can turn flywheel with screwdriver
At passenger wheel area:
Disconnect VSS sensor on diff cover of trans
Remove trans to engine diff bracket (4 13mm)
IMG_5451.jpg

Use extenions and deep 18mm socket to remove bolt that goes from engine into trans on the back of the engine.

IMG_5449.jpg

Support trans from below with trans jack/atv jack etc
Remove 4 (18mm) bolts holding trans to engine from above
Pry trans off engine and lower
IMG_5455.jpg

When trans is down, remove 1 10mm bolt holding dipstick tube in trans and pull tube out.
Slide trans out
Reverse for install

Tons of pics about axle pulling/balljoint etc and stuff in my photobucket account.

no i just has a mechanic put the new tranny in from a swap, he put in the broken torque converter and just put the whole car back together. now im out 350$. i was going to attempt this myself tonite.

How bad is the torque converter? If it's torn up inside it might be spewing junk into the valve body.

On th sticky suggestion, I guess we would mention it to Bio?

The torque converter has a broken missing weight. so there are only 2 of the 3 on it atm. i havnt even bothered starting the car since the swap. i figure it would be a bad idea. i have a question on holding the engine. i have a 4x4 piece of wood going across the whole engine. do i just need to tie a chain around the engine to the wood to keep the engine from moving? or do i need to lower the engine to unbolt the tranny.

I put the 4x4 across, run a chain to both engine pull brackets over the 4x4 and then use some 2x4 or small stock to take the slack out of the chain. The trans comes off after the engine/trans is supported by the 4x4 w/o having to lower the motor at all.

So the 4x4 i used snapped and the engine almost hit the ground :O. i resupported it with a cumalong. i just took the cradle off the car. what would be my next step?

Stop listening to me if you snapped a 4x4. I've seen a 2x4 used, always use 4x4's myself and can't imagine how you can snap a 4x4 with less than 1,000lbs of weight on it. Were you supporting the motor or the whole car?

What do you mean, what's your next step? I posted pictures and text saying what should be done to lower a motor and swap a converter. Somehow you already did the impossible.

Was this 4x4 older than you? How in the holy hell did you snap a 4x4 when it's supporting a motor/trans?

Hey there.. I'm new to this forum and am contemplating getting a 2004 or newer Grand prix. I read the trans removal write-up and it is excellent. I've always owned Fords and they have to have the engine/trans removed as assemblies with the subframe. My question is the transmissions on these cars can be removed without a hoist and the engine can be left in the car?

Thanks.

Is there anyway to get the bolt that goes in backwards from engine to trans while it is still in the car? Its the one you show the pic of the impact and long extension. Also the bracket that holds trans to engine i removed the 2 bolts on trans but is it necessary to remove the 2 on the engine also?? Any help would be greatly appreciated as i have the cradle and everything laying on the floor....

Why did you drop the cradle>? Pulling it out the top is way easier. Yes you have to unbolt that bracket from the engine and then that will allow you to go threw the passenger wheel well with long extensions and get the bolt out.
