How to identify what trans I have

I have a 2001 Grand Prix gt. I bought it with a top swap and I am having some trans issues. I have heard people buy shift kits and it fixes their failing trans issues, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I am looking at the thrasher shift kit and I would like to know what trans is in my car since their website says (NON HD) next to the shift kit I'm looking at. I want to make sure no one swapped a gtp trans in my car and I don't know about it.

I will take a look at that one. But since you replied I have a few more questions.

I have been having a problem since I got the car. The transmission seems perfectly fine unless I give it some throttle in a left turn. The engine will rev up as if its in neutral but its not. When the car straightens back out it will drive normal again. The fluid level is fine.

Second issue: my battery took a dump the other night. I replaced it and went for a drive. My 1-2 shifts are slow and feel weak. The trans seemed fine (other than the issue stated above) before the battery died. What happened? Thank you for your help.

1. Add half a quart of trans fluid. On hard left turns it is a known issue that the trans can starve for fluid. I've never needed to go about the full mark, maybe you are a little below the top line?

2. You disconnected the battery and reset the adaptive shifts. Give it a few miles to relearn.

Drive the car around today and like you said, shifting returned to normal. Thank god. I will add some tranny fluid tomorrow and hopefully that will solve my left turn issue.

After looking at the trans go shift kit you suggested it said that it wasn't a performance shift kit. I was looking for something more performance oriented. Is the thrasher kit a bad kit? I know people have bad things to say about zzp's kit.

ZZP's kit is 4 spacers that you could buy at the hardware store for $3. They did have plastic spacers and those could mushroom. I'd buy metal if I were buying just spacers.

Thrasher was bought up years ago and only sells stuff online. Their kit might include a couple extra spacers and I think the springs.

Transgo, They are one of the premier trans parts companies. The shift kit from them has springs, spacers etc. If you wanted to go furhter, you could add some additional spacers, but...... unless your trans has been built up. Likely it's not going to be happy with bang shifts.

Each trans I do work on or own gets the Transgo. TripleEdgePerformance one of the best vendors for a trans, recommends and installs them as well.
