How to get the the cam out?!



I dropped the two bolts out of the passenger side sub frame. Had to remove about a quarter inch of metal under wheel well for clearance. Slid right out new one right in. 02 GTP
 
You don't have to do any cutting and I sure as hell don't recommend that.. You just gotta lower the driver side a bit and you'll have room. Get a jack and a stand completely remove the 2 passenger bolts then on the driver side use another jack underneath the subframe and loosen the 2 driver bolts a bit.. But don't losses it to much where the subframe is going to drop.. The jack and stand are just there in case..
 


He used a hole saw.

most engines need the rear cover gasket replaced and while you have it out its nice n Easy to do the oil pan the valve covers and all the other gaskets that are probably leaking on a car with 100,000 miles

This.

Doing a cam install without pulling the motor, IMO is a billion times harder than doing it with the motor sitting on a stand. And like stated it gives you the ability to easily address the crap factory gasket set.

Do it right, or don't bother. You cheap out and half ass stuff, and you'll get that same half assed reliability.
 
So do you guys replace the cam bearings when you change your cam on a used engine? Just curious. I know I wouldn't but I have seen plenty of people do that.
 
To do the cam bearings requires the special tool and removing the crank typically.

I for one do not change them. Likely they should be.

The cam bearings CAN be done in car...without pulling the crank...just like doing a cam swap... However, it's a GIANT PITA and I don't recommend it. I also recommend letting a machine shop do it out of simplicity sake. You take them the engine and most shops will do the bearing install for less than $100.
 
FWIW once upon a time a guy posted and gave us some helpful advice.

If the motor is out of the car, turn it upside down with the rockers and pushrods out. Spin the crank once or twice and the lifters will push up and out of the way. You can do the cam w/o pulling the lifters this way.
 


roll the wheel of a 100k lifter next to a new/low mile lifter.

and even if you dont replace em, you might as well pop em apart and clean all the sediment out of the checkball

Sorry I meant to say I would replace them while I was in there. I would also replace the lifters and pushrods. I have put a cam in a buddies car without replacing lifters because he couldn't afford it and didn't want to wait. A week later one of them collapsed and it was clacking away. Had to pull it apart again.
